Golden light streamed through the window to the shared room of Matt and Mello. It was a usual fall day in Whammy's orphanage. The redhead lay on his stomach on his small twin bed, clicking away on his PSP. The room was otherwise silent, excluding the happy cheers and calls coming from the other children playing in the yard that floated through the window. Matt knocked his ankles together semi painfully, but ignored the sensation, completely immersed in his game. So oblivious in fact, that he didn't hear the angry yelling coming from the hallway.

The shouts got louder as the source of them approached the room occupied by the boy. Suddenly, the door of the room burst open, revealing a tearfull and frustrated Mello. The blonde flew into the room, in a screaming fit. Tears threatened to spill over the rims of his eyes.

"I HATE THAT ALBINO FREAK !!" he screamed, kicking the door shut with a loud bang.

Matt glanced back with mild interest. This had become an every day thing with the blonde. The raging boy screamed, cursed and threw anything he could get his hands on. Anything ranging from pillows and blankets to text books and paper ripped through the air and hit the floor. Loud bangs comming from their small room could be heard as far away as the library, which was across the building.

Somewhere along the way, the tears that were once wading in the blonde's eyes began to fall, staining his cheeks. Ten minutes later, he had burned his rage to embers, the boy held his stomach, squeezing his eyes shut and emmited a soft whimper. Mello collapsed to his knees, letting his tears stream in an everlasting waterfall. Small sobs racked his body as he lay crumpled there.

The redhead looked up, sighing and pausing his game, discarding the PSP on his bed, he joined Mello on the floor. Matt crouched next to the other boy and comforted him

"What happened now Mels?" He asked gently, putting an arm around the boy and pulling him into his lap.

The blonde obliged to the touch and crawled onto him, nuzzling his tear soaked face into his neck. Matt wrapped his arms around the shaking boy

"Shh..." He whispered soothingly into Mello's ear.

The blonde wimpered in his grip, "Near is such an ass.. he always has to one up me.. in grades, in school.. in life!" Mello sobbed into the redhead's neck.

His arms came up to loop tightly around Matt's neck as he cried.

"I know Mello..." Matt mumbled into his ear again, "and how are we gonna fix this?" He said, etching a small smirk on his lips.

Mello burried his face in Matt "We're gonna beat him!" The blonde said, suddenly gaining confidence from his best friend.

"Cos we're smarter, and stronger, and better.." Matt continued for him.

Mello nodded vigorously, "and we're gonna win." he said confidently, squeezing the redhead's neck in a tight hug.

A smile made its way onto the blonde's lips as they embraced eachother. Matt grinned at his ability to change his friend's mood from rage to self-assured glee. The two boys sat together like that for a few minuets, basking in the silence of the moment, Mello's head rested in the crook of Matt's neck and the redhead's chin laying on his freind's head. Their arms held eachother close in a hug that neither wanted to break. Unfortunately, their embrace was interpreted by a timid knock at the door followed by the squeaking of its hinges.

The door swung open, revealing the figure of a small girl standing in the door way. The two boys scrambled away from eachother hurriedly, both of their faces boasting a bright red colour. Mello stood up frantically and looked, embarrassed, at the small blonde girl standing in the door way. Matt stayed, frozen, in his sitting position on the floor.

"H-hey there S-Savannah... what's u-up ?" The blonde stuttered out awkwardly.

"Hi M-Mello.. " she replied, her voice was quiet and shy.

Savannah hid behind the lock of long, golden hair that covered one eye. The rest of her locks hung in a messy halo around her face, going down only a bit past her collar bones. The shy girl had a short stature, standing at just over four feet at 8 years old. She was a Pettitte thing, with large, stunning green eyes that could captivate anybody. Those same forest green eyes now stared curiously at the blonde, switching momentarily to the redhead on the ground, then going back up to Mello's own icy blue orbs.

Matt sighed awkwardly from his position on the floor and pulled himself up onto the bed again, unpasuing his game and returning to his isolated state, clicking frantically on the device. Savannah took a step into the room.

"D-do you thing you could help me with m-my ho-homework ...?" She asked timidly, twiddling her small thumbs in front of her and looking intently at the blonde.

Mello nodded, sighing as the awkward moment faded, "Of course, Savannah. What kind is it ?"

"Math.. my worst subject.."

"Sure, tell me what you're having trouble with.." Mello nodded gladly.

The girl produced a crumpled worksheet from her back pocket, along with a purple mechanical pencil. The boy sat on the floor in a crosslegged position and Savannah mirrored him, showing him the problems. Mello smiled ever so softly at her and proceeded to help, teaching her the technique. She nodded, following along with him as she learned.

About an hour later, they finished the last of the problems on her worksheet together, Mello stood up, stretching his shoulders out.

"So do you get it now?" He questioned.

"Yeah I-I think I d-do.. th-thanks.." the girl replied softly as she gathered her supplies and pulled herself off the floor.

The boy nodded sharply, "Sure."

Savannah allowed a small smile to paint her soft lips and gave a small nod, turning and leaving the room through the squeeky door.
