Chapter 14

"Daddy, I've tried everything bata yi." I was now on the verge of tears, I was getting scared too. The sound of the thunder and the lightnings was giving me chills, my whole body was shivering and everything I was bottling for the past two weeks was trying to come back and burst out of me.

"Calm down, Iram." He said. "I'll send help right away and stay on the phone with you."

"Toh daddy." I said, feeling a little bad that I was dragging him into my panic mode.

"Just hold on," he said into the phone before I heard him giving orders faintly. "Please go and pick up Iram, her car broke down somewhere around Central Mosque, she has sent the location to me, I'll forward it to you." I wondered who he was sending to me but I wasn't worried because I knew Sa'ad was attending a training on God knows what for the week. I found out three days ago when I walked daddy to his car and I saw a strange face. I've been avoiding going out to the premises of the house whenever I knew I could meet him but on that very day, daddy gave me his briefcase to hold for him as he was checking some papers as he walked to the car.

The new detail had greeted me and I answered politely but my curiosity got the best of me because I asked no one in particular "Sa'ad doesn't work here any more?"

"He's gone on training, he'll be back by Monday." The new detail answered me and I chanced a glance at daddy to see him looking at me strangely. He knew I never communicate with the people he works with, I usually mind my business. He must be wondering what was going on with me.

"Allah Ya bada sa'a daddy." I had said to him and he smiled tightly at me, so unlike him.

"So were you able to finish with the bank?" Daddy's voice snapped me back to reality. I went to the bank around 12 noon with the intention of upgrading some things I've been putting off for a while but as always, I was disappointed. I was told to go and meet the manager directly and introduce myself but I decided I wasn't going to.

"Yes, although I had to go out and pray." I said to him. "I saw Hajiya Binta and Uncle Isah, sunce a gaishe ka."

He chuckled. "At the mosque or bank?"

"Mosque, at the parking lot after the prayer." Uncle Isah was one of his friends for as long as I've known, he retired a few months ago and he and his wife have been inseparable since then, the reason why daddy was amused when I mentioned I saw them together. "Daddy, are you at the office or at home?"

"I'm at the office." Oh perfect. That means whoever he sent should be here any minute from now. "Hold on, I need to answer this call." He said and I kept quiet as I listened to him speak on his other phone.

A knock sounded on my window and I almost squealed as I turned around and whine down the glass, unlocking the car too. Thank God, finally. The figure crouched down and ugh- you've got to be kidding me.

"What are you doing here?" I asked. Because it was Sa'ad. How's he even here? Wasn't he supposed to be out there shooting guns or something?

"I was sent to come and take you home." He answered simply. "If you could just come down please, I'm getting wet."

"But I don't want to come with you."
