Professor McGonagall steps onto the stage, her presence quieting the room almost instantly. Graduation.

I should feel excited. Proud, even.

Instead, my eyes scan the crowd.

He's not here.

I search again, slower this time, like I might have missed him, but there's no sign of Mattheo anywhere. My chest tightens.

Theo is already watching me. There's something in his expression, nervous, almost apologetic.

"What is it?" I whisper, leaning slightly towards him.

He shakes his head, offering a small, careful smile. "This is supposed to be a good day for you. Try not to worry."

I frown.

Not worry? Our best friend is missing his own graduation, and I'm supposed to just what? Ignore it?

Before I can push further, McGonagall begins speaking.

"I would like to congratulate all of our students who leave us today. Each of you has faced your own challenges, and yet you stand here, ready to begin whatever comes next."

Applause fills the hall, but I barely hear it.

A hand slips into mine. I glance up to see Adrian beside me.

"Where's Mattheo?" he murmurs.

I shake my head slightly. "I don't know."

"Everything alright?"

I force a small smile. "Yeah. I think so."

He studies me for a moment, then nods, though I can tell he doesn't quite believe it.

"Before we conclude," McGonagall continues, "I would like to invite someone to the stage. Someone you all know quite well."

There's a ripple through the crowd.

I look up and freeze.

Mattheo.

He walks onto the stage like he's been there all along, like he hasn't just been missing for the last half hour.

I turn sharply to Theo and Draco. "You knew?"

They both grin.

"You're unbelievable," I mutter, though there's no real heat behind it.

I turn back just as Mattheo reaches the centre.

"Is this working?" he says into the wand mic, tapping it lightly.

A few people laugh.

"Right. I'm Mattheo Riddle. Though I assume most of you have already worked that out."

More laughter, easier this time.

"I'm not much for speeches," he continues, glancing down briefly before looking back up. "So I'll try not to keep you too long."
