I return to work the next day, which is a day full of important events. It's Zola's birthday and the Chiefs 10,000th surgery. "Good to have you back Tearney." Webber says cheerfully as we both make our way inside the hospital, Alex left earlier to get a jump start on the good surgeries. I smile "thank you sir. And congratulations." He gives me thanks as other people start to greet him. "Dr Bailey." He finally says spotting the short woman in the entrance hall.

"congratulations sir." She replies cheerfully before eyeing me "you sure you can come back to work?" I know she is thinking about my emotional stability since you know, my dad died but I just shake my head "all good here Bailey, you do not have to worry about me." She gives me a suspicious look as if to say 'we'll see.' Instead she turns back to Webber "big day." He waves a hand in the air "yes, it is, but... but I don't want everybody making a big deal out of it."

This time Miranda and I have the same look on our face because he obviously wants everyone to make a big fuss, who wouldn't? "We won't." Bailey tells him and she starts to walk away. I press the button for the elevator as Webber stutters "good. I-I-I mean, you'll.... you'll do something right?" Bailey stops but doesn't turn around "yes." She answers. Webber chuckles lightly "I mean, it is my 10,000th surgery. That's a lot of surgeries." Bailey slowly turns around, a look of boredom on her face.

"I've reserved the main conference room." She tells him, finally caving and I add "there will be a photographer from the hospital newsletter. The cake if your favourite red velvet and cream cheese." Bailey nods her head and steps towards the older man. "It's huge." She says "the size of four cakes. There will be several speeches from admiring colleagues and a toast with sparkling cider. We will also hang a banner that says 'congratulations Dr Webber on your 10,000th surgery' There will be three exclamation points after the word surgery."

Just when he thinks we are done I clear my throat and say "we also have confetti." The elevator dings open and Bailey asks "happy now?" But Webber just looks at her with a face of wonder. "Yes." He replies sarcastically and follows me into the elevator. "Oh except for the confetti." He says as an after thought "might get in the cake." I snort and the doors close. "I don't know what else you expected from Bailey." I say crossing my arms casually "you did kind of ask for it." He shoots me a look.

I meet Derek and Lexie as they go to brief a patients mother, having an easier case load also means that I have other people working cases with me. "His neuroblastoma is more complicated than most I've seen." Derek admits looking through the window to the boy sitting on a bed and playing a game on his mothers phone "it's very rare that someone his age..." The mother cuts him off "they're mostly in younger kids. I know." She says.

Derek sucks in a breath "it's in a very large region of his spine." He explains "there is the very likely risk of paralysis....." The woman sighs, the cleat signs that she this is her last hope. "From his upper body down." She finishes "there's also the risk of death, a death that he is gonna meet in three months anyway, if you don't do this surgery. I understand the risks Dr Shepherd. The surgeon in-in Boston compared it to dismantling a bomb with your eyes close, and the one is Chicago said it was patching a dam with gum. You're the ninth surgeon I've talked to. So what I want to know is, are you gonna say anything different, or do I have to take my kid somewhere else?"
