"I seriously need a break." Alex groaned as he entered the back room of the dueling arena.
Dan tossed him a bottle of water, "Here. Can't believe you dueled 5 people and beat all of them! Wish I had that kind of skill."
Alex drained the bottle and threw it in the trash can.
"I wish people would stop challenging me. My throat is starting to hurt." he complained as he sat down.
"I would cover for you, but today is the day Klein and the other newcomers are supposed to meet up. Tournament briefing and all that, so we can't miss it. You've gotten real lucky that it didn't happen while you were dueling out there, Alex." Dan lectured, with a hint of excitement in his eyes.
"Sure, but... it's hard to say no."
"It's two letters. One syllable even."
Suddenly the door flung open. Klein came in, along with a group of others.
"Ah good, you two were already here." he nodded, "We can begin. I'll explain the tournament."
The small crowd dispersed throughout the room. Some leaned against the lockers and walls, others sat on the benches. Alex glanced at every member, noting that most of them were kids his age, or close. One was especially young however, but Alex decided to pay him no mind.
"I'll explain this once today only, so listen closely. The New Beginnings Tournament is a tournament held for the newest 16 players who all joined this place in the past 4 weeks or sooner. The purpose of this tournament is to help you gain new cards and strategies, learn from one another and make friendships. Since there's always been complaints that the top 5 barely duel, a rule was added for the winner to challenge the top 5 and potentially replace them." Klein explained, eyeing every person in the room, "If one of you does end up defeating any of the top 5 ranked players, a separate event will occur, but that will undoubtedly never happen."
Klein walked around the room as he spoke, "The tournament will first have groups split into 2. 8 players each. You will duel until one of each group remains, which will be the finals of the tournament. Normally, the splitting of the 16 players and the duels would be done digitally, but it seems management has had some trouble with their systems, so we'll be doing the matchmaking here today, with the most boring solution management came up with. Everyone, draw a single slip of paper from this cup."
Klein held a large goblet in his palm. Inside were large folded up slips of paper. Everyone got up to pick one. Alex grabbed one and opened his. A large number was printed on top of the paper, with a slightly smaller number below it.
"What'd you get?" Dan asked, peeking into Alex's paper, "13? I've got 12. Does that mean we're the 12th and 13th participants?"
After the goblet was drained of paper, Klein gathered attention back to himself, "Ahem. So, the number on top of your paper dictates what group you are part of. If you have a 1, you are in group 1. If you have 2, you are in 2. There are only 2 groups. The number beneath that is the match you will participate in. Two people of each group have the same match number. Those two will duel in the arena. It is up to you if you wish to reveal yourself to the opponent today or not. Regardless, you both will meet eventually. The tournament will take place after 5 days and will last around a week. Now for the tournament dueling rules... they're the same as regular duels. You can shake hands if you want. If you have any other questions, say them now or ask me later."
The room was silent.
"Very well then, good luck. I hope to see you all put on a good performance." Klein quickly walked out of the room. As soon as he did, the room buzzed with noise. A few people immediately left while others formed groups trying to find their partner.
