Diavolo's POV:

"You want to know more about my stands power right?"

I raised an eyebrow. They smiled, sending a chill down my spine.

"I'll tell you, just keep it between the two of us okay?"

"Who do you think I would tell?" They laughed again at my question.

What the hell is wrong with this kid?

They stood from their seat and walked down the hallway, eventually coming back with an old glass vintage chess board, the pieces moved throughout the board as though they had been playing against someone.

They placed the board down on the coffee table before taking their original seat. I looked at the game, then at them, awaiting an explanation.

"My stand is called Checkmate. This chessboard represents the world, and the pawns represent the people and organizations within the world. With this, I'm able to manipulate some aspects of it."

"That makes no sense."

"It does when you know how to use it. I guess you could say I'm like Santa Claus. Or maybe it would be better to say I'm like an angel... Either way, through the pieces, to some extent, I'm able to look onto the lives of those who I choose. And by moving the pieces I'm able to change them."

"Meaning?"

"Meaning I'm able to rewind or speed up the process of time by moving specific pieces to very specific places on the board. As well as some other complicated stuff. It takes a lot of time and calculation, which is why it takes so long to reach the end of a game."

"So which piece am I?"

"In this game, you're the king."

"Why is that?"

"I have a theory. But I'm not telling."

I clenched my jaw. They laughed.

"I thought I told you to stop messing with me."

"Yeah, whatever. Now back to your original question. What was it again?"

"How is it that you still work under me?"

"Oh right. With my stand, I was able to pull you out of the time loop by creating a new game, and making you the king. And by doing some stuff with some pawns I was able to do blah blah blah and give some person blah blah blah and then BAM. A new mafioso boss."

My eye twitched. "You sure have a way of getting on people's nerves.".

"Yeah well, it's too hard to explain. The bottom line is that there's a clone of you working to give orders to the underlings. All orders which you would have given if everything was normal. So there's nothing really to worry about."

All of that was good and great, but there were still multiple things that didn't make sense.

"What about your friends? Weren't you also one that helped to defeat me?"

"Yeah, and now you're defeated so there's nothing more to it. I love my team but I also have my own curiosity outside of Passione."

"And what about that other brats stand?"

"Oh yeah. His stands effect is still in place. The changes made on the board aren't permanent unless they are solidified in the real world. I can move and manipulate pieces on the board to make the changes stick but that takes too long, so usually, before anything permanent can happen everything goes back to its original order and I have to restart the game."

"What happens when you finish a game?"

"That's only ever happened once so I'm not sure. But when I finish a game it's called checkmate, which is pretty obvious. What I do know is when checkmate is hailed all changes made to the world are permanent, either when I win, or when my opponent wins."

"So we have less than two weeks to reach the end, is that right?"

"Yup."

"Then what do you need to do to make everything set in stone?"

"Well, first I need to meet with Giorno. But until then nothing else can be done."

"Then shouldn't you be out looking for him now?"

"Nope. I've already made the arrangements. He'll come to me within the next couple of days. Maybe tomorrow? Or maybe I'll just go to his house again..."

I'm beginning to grow more and more impatient with each passing hour. The anticipation is almost too much to handle. But the little jerk sitting in front of me is the only hope I have.

"I can see how anxious you are. Just relax and enjoy yourself. Why don't you go for a walk before it starts to get dark?"

"Are you crazy? Why would I go out in broad daylight?"

"You sure are the same as ever. It's not like anyone knows what you look like so why not?

"Don't question me."

"Sure."

They smirked and I frowned.

Before any more words could be exchanged I stood and headed for my room.
