My eyes shot open, seeing trees above me. The night sky shimmered with silver stars around a waxing moon.

"Hey, your awake!"

I looked to the side to see what looked like a pale blue poltergeist sitting next to me. Both of their arms, a leg, and their midsection were detached from the rest of their body, a black shadow filling the spaces.

I rubbed my eyes. "What... who are you?"

"The name's Xyan," the ghost replied, "Welcome to Limbo!"

"Limbo?" I said, shaking my head. What the hell is Limbo?

"I can see you're pretty confused," Xyan pointed out, "Basically, your dead."

"What?" I said, snapping to attention.

"Yup!" They replied, "And your one of the lucky ones, by the looks of it."

"What's that supposed to mean?" I asked.

"So many questions!" Xyan chuckled, "Well, you're a Yudae now, which means you get to stay on Earth in your afterlife. And you can fly now!"

I looked to my side to see a white, dragon-like wing, mottled with black rips and tears.

"I doubt I could even glide with this many holes," I remarked.

"Physics don't really apply here," Xyan replied, "Or, whatever theory or law says that. You could literally just have a wing skeleton, and you could fly like normal."

"Huh," I said, standing up. I looked down at my ghost body - which looked a bit like my living body - just white and translucent, fading to gray on my arms and legs. I also noticed that I had a tail - a long demon tail, the tip broken into floating shards.

"Yeah, we have some demon features too," Xyan pointed out, "By the way, I never got your name."

"It's-" I started, but my mind went blank as I tried to remember my name.

After a few seconds, Xyan burst into laughter.

"Hey, that's not funny!" I said, annoyed.

"I'm sorry!" they replied, still laughing. "It's hilarious seeing the new ones pull a blank like that. You have to give yourself a name, your living one stays with your physical body."

"Oh," I said. "Well..."

I looked down at the ground, thoughtfully swaying my tail before saying out of the blue, "Gradient."

"Nice to meet you, Gradient," Xyan said.

"You too," I nodded.

"Now come with me," Xyan said, "Don't wanna be caught in your death-spot when the sun rises."

"Why?"

"I'll explain later. Come on!"

Xyan darted through the trees, and I was quick to follow them.
