ARIN

———

[About a month earlier]

"Meet you at 7 tomorrow?"

"Sure thing. See ya!"

"You, too!"

I waved goodbye to Soren before heading back in the direction of my house. A cool breeze broke the summer air, foreshadowing a cool autumn to come. A few white clouds dotted the cornflower blue sky above me.

I walked down the street, passing a few random people jogging or walking their dog or whatnot. Soon I made it to my house - a smaller one on the corner of two streets.

As soon as I got to the door, I noticed a yellow post-it note on my door.

"The forested area at the end of Maple, 5 pm. Don't be late."

No signature was written on the bottom, and I didn't recognize the handwriting.

Huh... I wonder who wrote it...

My curiosity got the best of me. I decided to go check it out.

———

It was 4:57 when I made it to the area described on the note. The forest seemed thicker here, the great oak trees looming over the undergrowth below. It did make me think again about my decision, but of course, I wanted to know what was going on. I took a deep breath before I walked into the darkness.

———

Leafy branches intertwined over my head, blocking out the light from the setting sun as I made my way into the forest. I nervously fidgeted with the ring on my right hand - a black, ebony ring with an amber imbedded at the top. It wasn't from marriage, but it was special to me as if it was.

I heard a twig snap behind me. I darted around, eyes wide in surprise and fear.

Geez, usually I'm not this jumpy.

"Someone there?" I called out.

"I see you accepted my invitation."

A man in a black hood stepped from the undergrowth, the light that was able to seep through the trees glinting in his eyes.

"Who are you?" I asked, on edge at the mysteriousness of the man.

"I'm afraid I can't tell you that," he said, "I don't give any information out to my vi- uh... people I meet immediately."

Was he just about to say "my victims?"

Scared now, I backed up. "Okay, I'm just... gonna go-"

The man slipped a knife from his cloak. The metal blade showed my terrified reflection back to me.

"That's not gonna happen," the man snickered.

He took a step forward, and I immediately turned tail and bolted.

I looked down at the body at my feet, my knife still twisted into his chest. Blood pooled on the ground by the wound, and stained the hoodie he wore. Some blood also dripped from his mouth.

Knowing what I was supposed to do, I knelt down and yanked the knife from his chest. The blade, still red with blood, reflected the sliver of moonlight that now shone slightly through the trees.

Time to get to work.

PRAXUS

"So tell me why you did the ritual? It really caused a lot of problems here."

It was special instructions from the client, Richard replied. Who I couldn't tell who it was anyway, it's always anonymous.

"Alright. Thanks for the information."

No problem. Can't believe I'm so casual about talking to a ghost right now.

I then stepped out of Richard's body and turned to face Xyan, who I could now see through my own eyes.

"You get anything?" Xyan asked hopefully.

I nodded. "I think I know what we need."
