"Honey! Takemichi-Kun is here to see you!"
Damnit. Why now?
I quickly wiped the tears from my face and inhaled to prepare myself to face him. I had been avoiding him for weeks after discovering he had a girlfriend. He had mentioned her before, but I had always thought that she was just a figment of his imagination. He usually joked like that, so it made sense to me.
After meeting her face to face and seeing them interact, it became clear that I was just trying to deceive myself into believing that he could be mine. I was so foolish.
"Yo, Y/n-chan. Can we chat for a bit?"
My heart clenched in my chest, and I smiled despite myself. "We can chat when you get a better sense of style, idiot." He looked down at himself, clearly offended, while I snickered behind my hand. "Hey! How could you treat your dear friend so harshly?!" Friend.
I turned my back to him and started walking back up that stairs. "Come on, dummy." His footsteps fell behind me as we headed to my room. We had walked up these stairs thousands of times before, but the air felt different. I so badly wanted to blame it on him, but I was the only one who had changed. No. Changed is the wrong word. I learned.
The door clicked close behind us, and Takemichi collapsed onto my bed with a dramatic sigh. He didn't show any sign of moving either. I gazed at him with tired eyes before finding a seat in my desk chair. I spun it around to face him and waited. And waited. He didn't seem ready to say a thing to me. So. the silence dragged on, and I tapped my finger against the armrests impatiently.
"That's it," I blurted after some time had passed. "There doesn't seem to be much chatting going on here. If you don't have anything to say, I have a very important thing called sleep to get to." My eyes shut tightly, and I tried to look upset with him. The truth was that I was incredibly relieved that he came to visit me. It proved that he still cared about me.
Takemichi turned over to his back and gazed up at the ceiling with a thoughtful expression. He looks different than usual. More. . .mature. "I haven't seen you in. . . three weeks, now? I've been pretty busy with my own things, but I feel like you're actively avoiding me." His tone was serious and determined. It was almost laughable, knowing how silly he usually was.
