We made it back to the beach about an hour before sunset. The heat of the day still being radiated in the water and sand. While Annie went to collect water in a big saucepan while I collected firewood. The trees around here shed, a lot so its easy to collect kindling but the large logs to burn I need to collect further up the beach. I peel a large bit or bark off the tree and strip the outer skin from a nearby branch, exposing the green wood underneath. I wind the skin into a fairly long bit of rough rope. With the bark and rope I fashion a sleigh and drag it up the beach. Annie taught me how to create the sleigh. Before she won her games she would collect starfish and shells from the water and dry them, once they had dried she would put them on the sleigh and drag them up the beach to the weighing scale. How much they would get paid was based on how heavy there load was, even if it was a really heavy load they wouldn't get paid much but still it was money. A few moments later I'm back at 'base camp'.
"Lazy, you should have carried it, keep you're fitness up." She says, to me this is sarcasm but by the look on her face she may actually be serious.
" I'm at the peak of my fitness thanks."
"Well that's not a very high peak, is it?" Now I know she is being sarcastic
"Watch it cheeky, start the fire for me, would you?"
"No you start it, I'm feeling tired and lazy."
"Hey I collected the wood, you start it."
"fine but you've got to cook, remember I did make you breakfast?"
"And it was a lovely breakfast, one of my favourites."
She goes in my backpack and pulls out a device from the capitol. It's in the shape of a flame with an imbedded button, that, when pushed a large firery material shoots out of the highest whisp of the metal flame, its almost sticky like resin but if it touches skin it won't burn, it's a good job, actually, I've got it caught on my hands many a time. She presses the fiery coloured button and the flaming globdual jumps out and lands on some kindling setting it ignite almost instantaneously. It's amazing to think, the capitol has a amazingly easy life, everything at there disposal, whilst everyone else struggles to survive. It's mad. After a few minutes the fire is blazing and the heat is incredible.
"Come on MASTERCHEF get cooking." she's got that cheeky glint in her eyes so I smile and say
"Of course madam, what will madam have?"
"Oh well madam will have fresh oysters served on the half shell."
"Very good, will she have anything else?"
"well I did get this for us."
delves into the tent and
into her sleeping bag head first, she looks like a caterpillar, folding in the middle then straightening out. "Ow." she cried as a load 'clunk' rings out
She pops her head out, keeping her hands in the sleeping bag "look away" she orders. I obey and she appears in front of me one hand behind her back, another on her head, rubbing it. " I've been savig this for a special time and I think now is that time." She pulls out a bottle from behind her back "OH MY GOD!" I shoot up and grasp it.
I know alcohol is readily available but this bottle is a very old bottle. It's covered in so much dirt its virtually a ornament. "Where did you get it?" I am so intregued.
"Well." She start. " you know before I became a victor, I was digging this lake with others to fill with water to grow fish in and, well I dug and flicked the soil to one side and I heard a dull thud so I went over and it was there, just sticking up, I put it in my shell bag and carried on working" I interupt and say "you're lucky you didn't get caught, you would have been punished"
Anything you find that has worth is, by law the property of the capitol, no matter if they made it or not.
" You say that, I did and the peacekeeper said i'd face the consiquences but, and I'm thankful for it now, I found a second bottle and I bribed him with it, he wanted both but I threatened to tell the head peacekeeper he was willing to tale a bribe so he took the one."
All I can conjure up is "wow" She does amaze me sometimes. "You open it and ill put the food together" I say.
POP and the cork disappears into the water, never to be seen again, the liquid inside has a bubbling sensation and ,from a discription I read in one of my mothers old books, I think its champagne which goes really well with oysters, lucky for us. I scoop out the oysters with two sticks and set them on a plate Annie got from her bag. I rip apart the two half of the shell leaving the oyster in one of the halfs, then something glints in the shell and catches my eye. I pick it up and smile to myself, a big. cotton white pearl.
"Here, for you" I say as I pass it, closed hand to Annie.
"Aww thank you Finnick" She beams as she hugs me and we sat there for the rest of the day eating oysters and drinking what we believed to be very vintage champagne
