The boy winced as he heard footsteps heading towards his bedroom from across the hall. The steps stopped abruptly outside the door and he tensed harder than ever.
"Alohomora." The figure whispered and the boy immediately relaxed. It was a familiar voice, a safe voice. It was his older brother Sirius Orion Black. "Reggie..?" Sirius whispered looking around the room in search of his brother. Regulus Arcturus Black was sat with his back to the wall, his knees tucked into his chest and his head in his hands. Tears were streaming from his eyes, but he made no sound. Bruises and cuts littered his body and the awful, unspeakable spell his mother had used on him still lingering like cheap perfume, but he made no sound.
Sirius eyes scanned the room and finally landed upon Regulus. Sirius took a deep breath, suddenly on the verge of tears himself. He hated seeing his brother like this, it happened too often to both of them. He approached the younger one slowly and cautiously, not wanting to scare him in case he hadn't heard him arrive. Sirius sat down next to his brother and Regulus immediately lifted his head and rested the back of it onto the wall. He was trying desperately not to look at Sirius and Sirius was looking desperately at him.
"Cruciatus." Regulus breathed.
"I figured." Sirius replied and leaned over to hug his brother. Regulus hugged back, silent tears still pouring from his eyes.
"One day..." Sirius began, and Regulus looked up at him, signalling that he was listening.
"One day we'll get out. We'll run away." Regulus almost smiled at the thought of leaving the Black Mansion for good but reality then hit him like a brick. "And where would we go?" Regulus questioned. Sirius thought for a moment and then grinned, "James Potter's house. My best mate. I can't wait for you to meet him in September..." Sirius carried on and on about his school friends, he talked a suspicious amount about a boy called Remus John Lupin, but Regulus eventually zoned out thinking about James Potter and whether he was really as good as Sirius claimed he was.
