I'm in my Bucky × child phase

Let's pretend Natasha can have kids rq :)

Requested by BuckyFanxxx

"Hey, kid." Bucky appeared in her doorway, "How was school?"

Y/n looked up, tears staining her face. She was nine, turning ten in a couple of months. Bucky Barnes, aka the Winter Soldier, was her father. Though she was only nine, all she knew was that he was super strong and took care of her in every way he could. Y/n's mom, Natasha Romanov, was very helpful towards her too. But, she was pregnant with Y/n's soon-to-be baby brother. Which is why she was crying now. Her mother still showered her with love and kisses, took her to school most times, and she even helped her with her homework today. But she left with Y/n's Aunt, Wanda, leaving her with her brother-like friend Peter and dog, (name.)

"What's wrong, sunflower?" Bucky cooed, walking over and placing Y/n's tiny body in his lap.

"It's not fair." She sniffled, throwing the colored pencil she had in her hand on the bed.

"What's not fair, doll?" He asked, wiping her tears with the back of his hand, "What happened?"

"Why does mommy have to have a baby?" She cried, grabbing onto his suit strap, "I don't want to have a brother!"

Her father chuckled, holding her close to his chest, he started rubbing her back and kissed the top of her head.

"Why not?" He hummed, raising a brow, "Mommy's excited for you to have a baby brother. She can't wait for you to see him."

"No!" She sobbed, "That means I won't have you guys to myself! I have to share!"

He chuckled again, grabbing her coloring book, "You really are like me. Look, sunflower, it's going to get easier I promise. Even mommy is worried at some point."

"She does?" Y/n furrowed her brows, wiping her nose, "But mommy said that it'd be a lot of respon. . stbiltiy. . ."

"Responsibility." Bucky corrected, swiping his thumb across her cheek, "She only means that you'll be there to protect your brother, like how I protect you."

Y/n raised her head, eyes wide, "I'm gonna be like you?"

"Yes?" Bucky tilted his head to the side, "Is. . Is that a bad thing?"

"What?" She immediately shook her head, "No! No, daddy, it's not bad! I wanna be just like you! I'm gonna protect my brother and do everything you do!"

At this point Y/n's giddy form was jumping up and down on her bed, practically getting dizzy. Sure, sharing her love with her mom and dad wasn't what she planned in her short years of living, at all, but to be just like her dad and mom? Of course she'd do it.

"Mommy is gonna have a baby! I don't like it but I'll protect him with my life." Y/n stopped jumping now, placing her hand over the opposite side of her heart, "I swear it on Uncle Tony's castle, that I, Y/n Barnes will never let. . . —"

"We haven't named him yet, sunflower." Bucky smiled, resting his head in his palm.

She only nodded, taking that as her brother's name for now, "I, Y/n Barnes will never let 'We haven't named him yet, sunflower' to get hurt by bullies and/or table corners. Amen."

She turned back to her father, seeing tears in his eyes, "Daddy?"

"Yes, sunflower?" Bucky answered, watching her with the biggest smile on his face.

"Why are you crying?" She frowned, tears of her own building up, "Is it because of mommy? I swear I'll protect 'We haven't named him yet, Sunflower' with my life! I swear on Uncle Tony's castle!"

"Oh, sunflower, no." He wiped his eyes, just now realizing that he'd been crying, "No, I'm just happy."

"Happy? Like when mommy gave you the snowboard for Uncle Steve's party?" She bit her cheek, playing with his metal fingers.

"His shield, sunflower." He corrected, smiling down at her again, "But, yes. Something like that. Have you seen Uncle Steve today?"

He needed to change the subject before he got too emotional. His baby girl reminded him of him and Steve so much. How he vowed to his mom to protect Steve after a few bullies got in the way. He didn't think he'd deserve someone as special as Y/n, but he was given a gift, and he swore on his own life to protect and provide for his family.

"No." She shook her head, watching as (dog's name) came waddling across her bed, "Only Peter and (name) were here. Mommy went away with Aunt Wanda, she said she'd be back in a little bit."

"How long ago did she leave?"

"Uhm. . . One, Two, T-three?" She started counting on her fingers, "Four. . . Six. . . Fourteen—"

"I'll ask her." Bucky covered her small hand in his, kissing her forehead, "But you never answered my question."

"Huh, what question?"

"How was school?"

"Oh," She perked up, straightening her hunched-over form, "Our teacher, Mrs. Wilson gave us a coloring book! See? I colored inside the lines and I got a sticker! I made a friend too. His name is Miles Morales. He said he came all the way from Brooklyn! That's where you grew up right?"

Bucky nodded, inspecting her coloring, "Yeah, it is. Anything else happen?"

"Yeah, at recess Mrs. Wilson made us play Hopscotch and race each other. I came in first. She said she's never seen anyone move so fast. I told her it was because of my daddy, he gave me superpowers! And then this girl named Gwen joined me and Miles, now we have a friend group! Can we have a sleepover? Pleeeeeease? I promise to help you do laundry!"

As Y/n continued to ramble on about her day, her father listened carefully. He loved hearing her stories about school, he loved that he had changed into a better man to be able to raise someone that he called daughter. He didn't think he'd get the chance, he didn't think he'd make it here. Y/n didn't know, but she's a mix of everyone in the Tower. From hanging around Thor as a baby to listening to Carol tell stories of her battles in space. Every aspect of her personality came from his friend and family, and God, he couldn't ask for more.

"Knock, knock!" Natasha came through her door, seeing her daughter fast asleep in her husband's arms, "Oh, she's sleeping. How did it go?"

Bucky looked up at her, his smile was watery from the incoming tears, "It gets better every day. Christ, she's amazing. I'm mad at myself for being gone for so long."

"It's not your fault." She gave him a small smile, gently kissing his lips, "That mission could've gone worse. I'm glad she didn't take it so hard. She missed you."

"I missed her too." He sighed, kissing Natasha again, "And you. How's it going so far?"

Nat shrugged, crossing her arms over her chest, "Nothing new. Got my experience from Y/n. I'm honestly, a little terrified."

"Of what, doll?" Bucky asked, gently taking Y/n from his arms and placing her on her bed, tucking her in, "Whatever it is, we'll all get through this. Together."

"I know." She looked away, her eyes cast down to the floor, "Just. . . What if, what if this time—?"

"Hey," Bucky tilted her head to look at him, he kissed her properly this time, taking her hand in his, "It's not going to happen. Y/n is perfect. And I'm sure this one is going to be too."

"How sure?" She whispered, the feeling of reassurance washed over her quickly as she hugged him, "How sure are you, love?"

He tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, kissing her on the crown of her head as he buried his nose in her hair. He savored this moment. The feeling of home seeping through his brain, made him feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

"More sure than anything. Because this," He gestured at everything around them, "I couldn't ask for anything else."
