It was a split second.

That's all it took for their lives to change forever.

A split second.

A flash of light.

Pain none of them will ever forget.

A split second.

The scream of their child.

The scream of a mother.

The scream of a father.

The lights flashing, sirens calling, machines beeping, the silence when she was pulled from her mother.

Deafening Silence.

...

Paul rushed into the NICU, looking at his one year old, hooked up to machines. He was the only one who made it out without being too harmed. Just a deep cut in his upper arm, from where the car door had torn it open.

"Nino..." He whispered, his voice cracking at the time his heart broke. He picked him up, careful not to pull a tube or wire out, sobbing as he knew his child was in a world of pain.

"You're not supposed to be in here sir." A woman said from behind him. He turned around, his arm still covered in blood, his eyes bloodshot, ash and oil covering him.

"My wife...she's 22 week pregnant." He sobbed. "My son's one. I was blinded for a second. It took a second to destroy it."

"Sir I'm sorry, but you're risking infecting your son. Is it okay if you clean up in the showers and I bring you back?" She asked.

"Do you know if my wife's okay? And the baby?" He asked, putting his son down, the machine still beeping.

"I'm not sure sir. Would you like me to take you to see them? What's your wife's name?" She asked.

"Tess Wesley." He said, his voice breaking, "Can I call someone before I clean up?" He asked.

"Of course, I do have to ask you to leave though." She said. He nodded, taking another glance at his son before he left, showering before he called Ian.

...

"Ian.." he whispered, holding the phone to his ear, his hand shaking.

"Hey man! Did you see the news, that crash? Family of three apparently." Ian said.

"Ian come to the hospital." Paul said, his voice breaking again.

"Paul. What's wrong?" Ian asked, suddenly on guard, shuffling in the other end, telling Nina he was leaving.
"Paul talk to me!" Ian shouted.

"It was me." He whispered. "I was the family of three. Ninos holding on for his life and I don't know where Tess is! Ian I need you by my side, I don't know where my fucking wife is! I don't know if my baby is okay, I don't know what's going on! Ian please." He sobbed, tears streaming down his cheeks.

"I'm on my way, driving as fast I can brother. Hang on for me, don't do anything stupid! Your son needs you, your baby needs you, your wife needs you!" Ian said, honking the horn as he sped down the highway.
