The next day, in the Hoekage’s office, the Hoekage was having a meeting with the Head of the Uchiha clan, Fugaku Uchiha. “Fugaku, thank you for getting here on such short notice.” said the third Hoekage as he gestured for Fugaku to take a seat. “Aa.” replied Fugaku as he took a seat. “Ah yes? It’s a shame that Mikoto couldn’t make it.” said the third Hoekage. ‘It would have been nice to have someone here who spoke Uchiha.’ thought the third Hoekage. “She was pulled away by some urgent clan matters.” replied Fugaku. “Right.” said the third Hoekage. ‘At least he’s speaking in full sentences.’ thought the third Hoekage.
“Might I inquire as to why you summoned me?” asked Fugaku. The Hoekage’s reply was interrupted by a knock on his door. “Ah yes. Kakashi, you may enter.” said the third Hoekage. Kakashi entered the office with Dan behind him. Fugaku’s guard went up when he got a whiff of an unfamiliar alpha’s scent. ‘Strange. Scent blockers.’ thought Fugaku. The third Hoekage and Fugaku stood up and greeted Kakashi and Dan. “Fugaku, meet Dan Katō the leader of the Land of Flowers. Dan meet Fugaku Uchiha the head of the Uchiha clan.” said the third Hoekage introducing the two men.
“Nice to meet you.” said Dan who was unusually stiff. “Likewise.” replied Fugaku as he studied Dan. “You’re quite the powerful alpha aren’t you.” said Fugaku. “So are you.” responded Dan with a smile. “I suppose that I have to be grateful that eight members of my clan were in the care of a powerful alpha such as yourself.” said Fugaku as he bowed, shocking everyone in the room. “There’s no need for that. Raising them was an honour.” said Dan with an embarrassed smile.
“Fugaku, how did you know about the quads?” asked Shikaku who had been silently watching. Fugaku looked at Kakashi and replied, "He may be half Uchiha but he is still an Uchiha. It is his duty to report anything to me that may pertain to the clan, unless it is classified of course.”
“Well that saves us the trouble of having to catch you up,” said Shikaku as he scratched the back of his head. “Let’s get to business then.”
“You said eight why? When only four are of your clan?” asked Dan once everyone was seated except for Kakashi and Shikaku. “From what Kakashi told me they are a family of eight. Four being the ones you believe are Uchiha and the other four being their mothers, uncle and grandfather?” said Fugaku looking at Kakashi for confirmation to which Kakashi nodded. “It’s only natural that they become members of the clan as well. Naruto and Kurama increased our clan by four. Iruka and Shino helped raise them into splendid shinobi. From what Kakashi told me,” said Fugaku with a barely the smile. “Accepting them into the clan is the least we can do.”
“How are you sure that the quads are of your clan?” asked Dan. ‘He seems different.’ thought Shikaku as he studied Dan. “I can smell it,” said Fugaku confusing Shikaku and the Hoekage. “As the leader of the clan, I know everything about everyone in my clan including their scents. Although, you are using scent blockers I can smell minute traces of your scent on your clothes. Your scent and theirs has mingled like that of a family or that of a clan, but not to a point where I can’t differentiate it. Their scents are somewhat similar that of those from my clan but I need to be near them to tell you who exactly that is. I assume they got it from their mothers. Their mothers might have their alphas' scents still lingering on them and they might have passed it on to their children.”
“Fourteen years have passed. It is impossible for that scent to be still on them.” said Dan. “That may be so but as I’m sure you know the bond between mates can do inexplicable things.” replied Fugaku. “You do have a point.” said Dan. “Now then, I’m sure the third has told you about where he is planning to accommodate your family but we were hoping that you would be willing to let them move to the Uchiha district.” said Fugaku. “What?” asked Dan who was as bewildered as everyone in the room well except for Kakashi.
“As I said, they are now a part of the Uchiha clan and they shall be treated as such meaning they will be living in the Uchiha district. We already have a house ready and built to your exact specifications. We Uchiha tend to be territorial when it comes to our own therefore it is much safer for everyone, if they live in the Uchiha district.” said Fugaku. “What do you want in return?” asked Dan. “Loyalty.” replied Fugaku. “To you?” asked Dan. “Loyalty to the clan and the village.” replied Fugaku. “Done.” said Dan with a smile.
The third Hoekage cleared his throat bringing everyone’s attention back to him. “It seems there is no need for me to worry. You've managed to settle this matter quite well but I have to ask. Kakashi told me that you handed over custody of your family to him. Wasn’t that a risky decision?” asked the third Hoekage. “Yes it was and still is but not as risky as letting them stay back in my village,” said Dan as his eyes turned red. “Those eight have been my only reason for living for a very long time and trusting them to another alpha is driving me mad.”
Everyone in the room immediately tensed and let their guard up. Dan let his chakra flow freely out of him. The four other alpha in the room knew exactly what he was doing. They all suppressed the urge to respond to his challenge. “Don’t misinterpret my actions. I may be their alpha but that does not mean they are my property. Me ‘handing over custody’ to Kakashi is just a figure of speech. I am simply asking him to watch over them.” said Dan nonchalantly, as if he was not challenging them.
“My actions may seem strange to you but I have thought about them for a long time, fourteen years to be precise. The only reason I chose him and this village for them is because I feel they would be good for each other. Trust me it wasn’t an easy decision.” said Dan with a sigh. “You may think me strange, insane, naïve and a little idiotic, you wouldn’t be the first but I am not to be underestimated. Those who made that mistake ended up as lunch for the feral wolves.” said Dan as he stared at his hands.
Memories of all those he killed with those very same hands flashed through his eyes. The room was deathly silent as they watched Dan who seemed to be fascinated with his hands. “If something were to happen to them under your care...”
“Lord Dan don’t misunderstand, we--“
“You were only asking whether I was sure about my decision.”
“Yes.” replied the third Hoekage.
“Good, from your question, I thought that you were implying that my family was not safe here and after I worked so hard to gain your trust.”
“Lord Dan--“
“I thought that all the lives lost to gain your trust were all in vain.”
“Lord Dan--“
“I understand that you are worried and I thank you for that but don’t question my reasoning for I have thought about this for a long time. Everything will make sense in due time but in the meantime just trust me.”
