"Can I have the window seat?" Alana asked Danielle impatiently once they finally arrived at their seats. They passed Este, who waved smugly from her first class pod-shaped seat, and Danielle had to hold Alana back from lunging forward and wiping the stupid smile off their older sister's face.
"Sure," Danielle agreed, stepping aside to Alana could get in first.
Alana barely muttered a thank you and practically squished herself up against the window. She buckled her seat belt and twisted in the seat so her back was facing Danielle. The older girl grimaced and knew this was going to be a long flight. With Alana in a mood and Este living it up in first class, her only option was to either sleep or drink.
Danielle watched the people file in the seats around. She just hoped no one would be sitting with them since Este's seat was now vacant. It wouldn't be fair to subject a total stranger to Alana's mood swings.
"Our flight time is fourteen hours and thirty six minutes..."
Alana could not listen to the flight attendant. She groaned into her hands and repositioned herself so she could stare at Danielle sadly. "That's too long."
"Are you going to whine the entire flight?" Danielle asked. "Because if you are, I'm going to order a shit ton of alcohol."
"All I said was that's too long!" Alana continued to whine without even realizing it. She was exhausted and anxious as it was. How was she going to survive a fourteen-hour flight she didn't even want to be on in the first place?
"What do you want me to do about it?" Danielle said, clearly exasperated. "It's not like I can snap my fingers and have us be transported to Australia."
"Well, why not?"
Danielle leaned back in her chair and shut her eyes. "Shut up."
As soon as the plane reached its intended altitude, Danielle flagged down one of the flight attendants and ordered a jack and coke.

It had been nearly four hours and Alana had not said a single word to Danielle. She was pressed up against the window, absently staring at the twinkling lights as the plane carefully glided through the sky. Once they got to Sydney, it was straight to work. There would be no time to even settle in.
Alana grew restless thinking about it. She was beyond exhausted but sleep didn't seem like an option right now. The cabin lights were dimmed and nearly everyone around them were sleeping but she couldn't even relax long enough to shut her eyes.
Danielle was way too invested in her Orange is the New Black marathon to notice it was well past three am. She looked over when she heard Alana turn in an attempt to get comfortable. Taking off the crappy airplane headphones, she threw them in the seat pocket and yawned.
"Here," Danielle said when she couldn't watch Alana flail about in her seat anymore. As amusing as it was, she knew something was going on with her sister. She grabbed the small pillow from behind Alana's head and placed it next to her thigh. "Lie down."
Alana untangled herself from the static-filled blanket and did as she was told. She curled herself into the fetal position with her back facing out.
"Will you rub my back?" Alana asked, beyond exhausted. Her heart rate was slowly returning to its normal beat and as soon as she felt Danielle's hand run up and down her back, her eyes shut instantly.
