A Meeting With Fate
CHAPTER 3
—————I awoke around 7am as the early gray sky spilled through my curtains. I began to adjust to my surroundings, glancing down at Kit. Her arm was lying gently on my chest and her head rested on my shoulder. I liked this. I lifted my arm and slowly placed my own hand on her small arm, drawing figure eights on her soft skin. Her breath brushed my neck repeatedly every few seconds. It was all so insanely surreal. I felt myself lightly smile, taking in the short lived peace that would soon be interrupted by our plans today. Her breathing became irregular as she began to stir.
“Morning Soot…” She said, her voice deeper with the morning. “Good morning…” I locked eyes with her, smiling. “I enjoyed myself last night,” she smirked, not forcing her eyes away. “As did I” I said tiredly, still smiling. She allowed her head to rest again as she sighed. “We should go sooner or later…” Kit definitely didn’t sound eager. “What time is this meeting of yours?” I asked her, staring up at the ceiling. “Ours…” She corrected me. “And we have to be there at 9am” It was as she said this that I realized we were both in nothing but underwear. “We should probably get ready to leave then” I muttered. I didn't receive an answer, but she began to sit up. Before she fully got out of bed she leaned over and kissed my jawline. I smiled up at her as the warmth was eventually gone. I kept my eye on her as she walked across the room, bending down to pick up the clothes that were violently thrown across the room the night before. Eventually she turned around revealing her chest. I quickly averted my gaze, feeling as if it was almost wrong to see her without any top layers. Although I had to admit, I tried quite hard to not glance back. “Fighting the urge there Soot?” She asked, obviously noticing my darting eyes. “Are you ever gonna call me by my actual name?” I asked, sitting up. Trying to avoid the question as best as I could. “I will when I want to” She shrugged, pulling her bra and shirt over her hair. it fell much too perfectly for her to have only woken up. “Have you forgotten?” I asked, snickering at her. “No, names are actually quite difficult to forget, I just think Soot really suits you” She sounded quite serious, debunking my thought of her short memory. “Put on some clothes there, handsome” She muttered the very last part, glancing away as she tossed my clothes at me from the floor. “What was that?” I asked her again, smirking. “Nothing…” She composed herself quite well as she shut the bedroom door behind her, leaving me on my own once more.
Once I had left my room, Kit was already impatiently waiting at the door. Quite quickly I sighed a little too dramatically. “Can I at least eat something first?” I asked her, sounding almost like a child. “No, we can pick up food on the way back, this is too important” I recollected myself. trying to hide my hunger. “Alright...” I joined her as we walked out. Once we were in the hallway Kit reached into her jacket, nudging my shoulder. I glanced down looking at the gun I had used yesterday, concealed behind her jacket. “Take it and put it in the waist of your pants, then cover it with your sweater,” she whispered. It all felt so wrong, but that didn’t hold me back. I quickly grabbed it, stuffing it under my belt. “Alright now, are you going to explain exactly where we’re going? and don’t give me any of this ‘irrelevant’ bullshit…” I asked quietly. The tension between us had slightly shifted since an hour ago. Her short pause let me know that she would tell me. “Fine, now I'm only telling you this once right, the woman we’re meeting is working for a certain organization, once owned by my now deceased father. After my father had passed, the organization was given to the heir of the company, my uncle” she talked quite rapidly as we continued quickly down the hall. “My father, before his death was unable to remove my uncle from his will, therefore absolutely fucking everything up. My uncle is sorta an ex-convict, always running from the law, he was eventually excluded from the family as all he did was cause issues. Within his anger, once he assumed power, he decided to take out his anger on the only last living immediate members of my family, which would be me and my brother. Long story short, the woman we’re meeting with is a representative. We're going to chat with her considering my brother's safety” We exited the elevator walking for the door. I had absolutely no words. How could a single person assume so much power? “Wh-” I tried to speak but I couldn’t say anything. “I'm sorry Kit…” I said quietly. feeling the cold air, brushing my face as we entered the outside world. “It’s alright, I’m used to it, people do bad things in order to survive'' Her phrase reminded me of the man from yesterday, and I prayed that he was alright, but a small voice in myself told me it was okay, if I hadn’t done anything I may not have received any love the night before, or even given any. “Okay… then, where are we going? Where is this organization?” I asked, looking up at the sky scraping buildings and familiarly, the sky was a dark greenish gray. I craved alcohol, I couldn't subdue it, I was becoming nauseous without one of my highs. “We’re not going there, we’re meeting somewhere obscure, abandoned” I felt my heart drop, there weren't many abandoned spots very close in the city. “How far are we going?” I asked, trying to look her in the face. “What's up your ass? it’s only 10 minutes if we take the tube” She looked at me like I was crazy. “Oh… Okay…” I muttered, feeling a little embarrassed. “One thing I must warn you of though” We locked eyes as I waited for her to continue. “She’s quite unpredictable” Her words worried me, and I never would’ve been able to predict what might happen today.
We both stepped off of the subway, the air was smokey. As the clouding air filled my lungs I gagged, quietly coughing at the smog. “Get used to it Soot” She said, taking a deep grimacing breath, also seeming disgusted by the air, but far more accustomed than I was. “Still got it on you?” She asked. Surprisingly I knew what she meant as I rapidly felt at my waist, eventually finding the concealed weapon. “yeah…” I said , sighing. I felt guilty knowing I walked with what could be the cause of an end, with others unknowing. But I had to, for Kit. We reached the top of the concrete stairs. It was raining outside again. This part of the city had far more glowing lights and signs. I looked past the brisk wind and smoke, the sight was magical. I followed Kit as we took a sharp turn to cross the street as small puddles vibrated with each drop of rain that fell from the sky. My eyes remained locked on her as I kept up not far behind. Her hair blew in the wind, but not too harshly. Just enough to keep me from looking away. The damp street reflected the bright colors that shot off of the signs. Icy teals and burning pink, seemed to be the popular favourite. I hid my hands in my pockets and looked all the way up at the huge buildings. “Is there anything I should be specifically ready for?'' I asked her as I caught up, now walking beside her. She was clocking my question, searching for an answer. “just-” she started, before losing her words once more. I stayed quiet, giving her the time she needed. “Just be careful,” she said softly, watching her feet. her words hadn’t startled me though, Kit had been frequenting the idea of this all being quite dangerous. This was the first real feeling I’ve had in a long time. She took hold of my wrist dragging me down yet another alley. “what’s with you and alleys?'' I couldn’t see her face but I could almost hear her eyes roll. “bloody hell, quit complaining '' I had an unusual amount of moments with this girl and alleys. As we continued down the dark stone hallway we reached a metal door on the side of the left building. Kit walked up the single step and reached into her pocket, pulling out what looked like a silver bobby pin. she blatantly bit the rubber edges off and spit them onto the ground. I watched as she shoved the metal pin into the doorknob, and spun it in multiple which ways I wouldn't remember for the life of me. there was a soft click and she removed the metal, returning it to her pocket as she twisted the knob to open the door. As the heavy door pushed forwards we were greeted with a dingy smell, it wasn’t unbearable but it definitely wasn’t good. “fuck, did someone die in here?'' I said, a little startled by the contents of the empty building as I stepped inside behind her. “Probably,” Kit said calmly. I glanced around, the whole room was filled with plastic covered furniture with everything caked in dust and webs. Across from us to the right was another stone staircase. “Let's get this done with then,” she muttered, closing the door behind her. Now we’re committed… I thought to myself, although the door wasn’t locked, we were in here and there wasn’t any other way out. “Did you bring us a guest Kit?” a sophisticated yet excited voice rang from above us. The call didn’t stop her. Kit began up the stairs as I hesitantly followed, I looked quite weak, I was well over six-foot, cowering behind Kit. with each step up the stairs my heart rate heightened. I had a cold sweat that still felt like boiling water drenching me with every second that passed, it burned me, I'm not fireproof, and I wished with everything in my heart that it wasn’t burning her as well. The second we reached the end of the staircase to hell, I could've sworn my heart stopped beating, but I was still here, breathing fine. In front of us were three people. In front was a tall woman, in a long navy trench coat, and a fedora looking hat that covered the top half of her face, with red finishings. Her hair was long and brown, tucked behind her shoulders, sitting on her back. The two other men were dressed almost identically, both in a tight fitting black suit and dress shirt, with no tie. across from them was a jerry can that looked to be almost 3 quarters full. “Who's this handsome young man?” the woman asked cheekily. Kit exhaled, trying to conceal her anger. I'm guessing she held somewhat of a grudge “He doesn’t matter right now, we’re here concerning my brother” the lady took a moment to look around the room. smiling a lot happier than she should’ve. “Well, in the grand scheme of things it doesn't really matter, at the end of the day, we’re all going to die, not to mention the highly trained personnel you killed just yesterday” she smiled walking up to Kit standing not far from her.
I killed that man.
I thought, beginning to feel a bit numb
“I know that but I'd rather get him to his other aunt and uncles where he'll be safe!” she was raising her voice. I felt helpless, as the two men watched my every move. “He’s already there” she spoke with her eyes wide. the woman was transparent, she was quite obviously bluffing. “BULLSHI-'' before Kit could complete her curse, the woman’s hand flew up as the back of her palm smacked the side of her face. The smile on the lady’s face was now wiped away with the power she held. for a second I had no control over anything I did, reflex took me over as I grabbed Kit’s upper arm. “Hey! leave her the fuck alone!” my own voice was rising now. Kit glanced at me with her hand holding the red splashed side of her face. “Silly boy…” the lady said, sticking out her bottom lip. I felt a sudden sting in my left thigh. I peered down at the dart that was buried in my leg. The room was slowly spinning. My leg was being pricked by tens to thousands of invisible needles. “No…” Kit said, looking incredibly worriedly. “Kit..?” I asked. Where am I? Where did the floor go? I felt gone. I'm so scared. I feel my eyes shut.
I think my head hit the floor, but I couldn’t feel it, my face was being pushed through layers and layers of snow, pure ice even. I’m so cold. I couldn't even get a final thought in before I was fully blacked out.
I woke up restrained. My head was beating so hard, so loud. I tried to open my eyes but my vision was incredibly blurry. After a minute or so my eyesight had cleared. I was still scared, scared for me, scared for Kit. As I began to adjust to my surroundings, muffled voices faded in through my ears. I looked down slowly, the dart had been removed from my leg, I sat wondering what had happened before I realized I was tied tightly to an old metal chair. I struggled gently, feeling my wrists and ankles burn at the friction. I was too scared to say anything. My legs were drenched with what was presumably water, all the way up to my knees. I looked up to take in the situation that played out in front of me. “If you return my brother to the agreed spot, three days from now I’ll get your payment…” Kit said, sounding defeated. We were in an entirely different location of the abandoned room. They must’ve tied me up like this for a reason. So I had to keep from giving them another reason to do something worse. I looked over at Kit as the woman clapped her hands in celebration. Kits eyes eventually found mine, widening the second they greeted. She held back though, her frustrated stance quickly changed as her crossed arms fell to her sides. We watched each other for a few seconds. I knew I'd be alright while looking at her. I had only known her this short while, but I wanted her and only her. “Don’t try to meet with me again, three days' time and you better hold up your side of this little deal of ours… Kitrina” Her eyes quickly darted to the floor, her cheeks flushing pink, looking slightly embarrassed. My hair fell uncomfortably askew on my face, I couldn’t push my glasses. The woman and her followers made their way to an almost identical staircase to our right. “James, light it” The lady demanded of one of the men. The man with scruffy blonde hair took one look back at me before hesitantly pulling a match from his pocket. This was when I realized my legs weren’t wet with water. I began to panic. The lit match hit the floor quickly igniting the trail of gas that would eventually reach me. turning my body into a virtual tinder box. Within seconds the people were gone. And it was once the two of us. I was scared. I wanted to be outside in the cold rainy street, lying in bed with this girl. Kit moved rapidly, removing her jacket and throwing it over the flame, that didn’t stop it though. It continued. Frantically, I scanned the room for something, when my eye landed on the large cream coloured sheets that covered some of the furniture. “Sheets Kit! sheets!” I yelled, signaling my head towards the huge piece of cloth. She gathered the fabric, tossing it over. The fire was becoming dangerously close to my legs. I shook rapidly in the chair, trying to break free. Kit smothered the flame against the sheet with her foot. she returned to my side again, grabbing the back of the chair and dragging me further from the suffocated trail of flame. The dragging came to an abrupt stop as the room became quiet. All of a sudden she was directly ahead of me. Her hands resting on my cheeks “are you okay? Please tell me you're okay!” She said out of breath. I nodded quickly, I couldn't get words out as quickly as I wished. “I'm okay…” I spoke hoarsely. She exhaled in relief. Looking me in the eyes for a moment before a small smile crept to her face. “Can you untie me?” I asked, exhausted. “yes, yes…” She mumbled., pulling a blade from her pocket. “wha- where’d you get that?” I asked her, genuinely confused. “Gotta be prepared” She muttered, pulling at the thick ropes with the sharp metal. Eventually and after many winces of pain my wrists were released from the ropes. “Oh…” I groaned, quickly rubbing them, trying to relieve some of the pain. Kit switched her attention to my ankles now, ripping the barriers. “Ah!” the ropes tightened, burning my legs. “Sorry…” she apologized, peering up at me for reassurance. “Can I continue?” she asked softly. “just… be careful,” I answered slowly. Soon enough my ankles would also be set free and I felt such a relief, not being stuck anymore. Kit brushed off her pants as I cautiously stood up. Having not moved in hours. The second I managed to balance myself up I looked down to watch Kits eyes. But I only had a glance for maybe a second before she had her arms outstretched and wrapped around me, her head resting on my chest. I quickly became accustomed to her warmth and decided to somewhat embrace it. I gently wrapped my arms over her back and relaxed my hand on her head, brushing her hair lightly with my thumb. “We’re okay now,” I whispered. “We’re okay”
