Hiding In Plain Sight
CHAPTER 8
—————
Although the night before was oddly hectic, this morning had been quite peaceful. I had woken up cuddled up with Kit just like I had the past few days, and I swear that it’ll never get old. I was a better man around Kit. As surprising as it may seem, I made breakfast for the two of us this morning, although scrambled eggs and potatoes might not seem like much, I still felt fulfilled. It was 12:46pm and our little get-together was an hour and a half out of the city if we took the train, so Kit felt the need to already get herself ready. She had already been in the washroom for 45 minutes and I was seriously wondering whether she’d ever come out. From what she had told me, she had bought a dress, makeup and jewelry, and I thought maybe it was me who was being spoiled. Like a child in a candy store, she was my eye-candy. I sat up from the couch to go knock on the door. “Are you almost done in there?” I asked her, opening the door just a crack. “Hey! No peeking!” She quickly closed the door. “I'll take that as a no,” I chuckled. “You should go get ready yourself, we’re leaving in an hour or so” she called from the other room. I didn’t reply but I knew she was right, I hadn’t even brushed my hair. I strolled into our room and opened my closet. I had many blazers but I only really had one that was considered ‘formal’. I pulled the blazer and dress shirt from the hook and threw them all on the bed. I took grasp of the bottom of my shirt and quickly pulled it over my head. I should probably grab pants first… I thought. I returned to my closet, pulling the pants out of a small drawer. I took the shorts off that I was wearing and briskly put on the dress pants. I jumped a little getting used to the fabric as I fed my belt through the top. Once I had the pants on I grabbed the white dress shirt pushing my arms through and buttoning it up, though I didn't button it all the way, just almost to my neck, still letting some of my chest show. I tucked the shirt under my pants before tugging the blazer on. It all surprisingly fits quite well, and I felt good in it. I stepped out of the room and back outside the washroom. “How about now? Are you done now?” I asked again, pressing the side of my head on the door. “You're so impatient, Soot” I could hear her laugh. “That’s not my name” I smirked, curious for her reply. “it’s your last name” I could almost hear the grin on her face. “yes, I know that” I gave up on the cause. “Don’t worry I'll be out in the next 10 minutes.” My excitement was building. “Fine, fine just please give me the brush will ya?” I opened the door and fed my hand through the small crack. “Well since you asked nicely'' Kit muttered as I felt her place the brush in my hand. “Thank youuuuuu'' I dragged on, shutting the door. My hair never really needed much brushing but I figured I’d put effort into myself. I shook my head running the brush through my thin hair and it definitely became fluffier. I tossed the brush onto the couch, scrunching my hair with my other hand. I couldn’t focus on anything, I wanted to see what she looked like, I knew she’d look pretty, she always looked pretty, but I just knew she’d come out of that washroom looking like every star in the fucking sky that’s for sure. I sat down on the couch, opening my phone, it was 1:06pm. Everything on there was quite dry, boring even. I shut my phone off before hearing the washroom door open. I excitedly jumped up from the couch waiting to see her. Kit stepped out of the small room brushing herself off. The second I laid my eyes on her I couldn’t stop staring. She looked like the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. I felt my jaw drop slightly, she wore a long black dress that cut like a V down her chest and to her stomach, the silky black fabric flowed to her ankles with thin precarious cuts on both sides. She didn’t wear much makeup, but with what she had on she looked like something out of a day dream, she was my own personal sunset. Her lips were lightly coated with red, her eyes were clouded with a light black and her lashes looked dark and soft. “Do I look okay..?” she asked, holding her hands behind her. Dangled from her ears were silver earrings in which she wore a necklace of the same shine. Everything about the way she pulled it off just sat so perfectly. “You look…” I quietly stated, searching for the words that would describe the royalty in front of me. “You look absolutely gorgeous,” I smiled, still trying to admire every part of her. I stepped up in front of her. “You look very handsome yourself” she chuckled, looking me up and down. I placed my hands on her waist as Kit grabbed the folds of my blazer. She had quite the smile over her face, and I loved how genuinely happy she looked. “I don't want to touch you and ruin how beautiful you look” I said, refraining from holding the side of her face. “Don’t say that” she laughed, I watched as her cheeks visibly heightened in temperature “Are my lips gonna be red if I kiss you?” Someone might’ve thought I was joking but I was dead serious. “Not if you're gentle,” she spoke quietly. “Well then…” I muttered, slowly leaning down to touch her lips, softly kissing her for a second or two. Once I pulled away she was already watching my eyes again. say it. I desperately thought to myself. Say my name, say Wilbur. “We should get going Soot, or we’ll be late” she pulled away, still remaining with our eye contact. “Fashionably late” I corrected her, earning her laughter.
The train ride to the building was long and quiet, I held the girl's hand almost the whole way, and it felt nice knowing I didn’t have to let go. It was more of a comfort for me and a necessity for her, as she found it quite difficult to walk to the station in heels without tripping, but I didn’t exactly want her to take that risk either. When we finally arrived, our destination definitely wasn’t far from the station. We both stepped off of the train, I tightly held her hand as she cautiously stepped off. Both of us definitely looked over-done for the subway. “It's only a three minute walk from here” She muttered. I checked the time quickly, pulling my phone from my pocket. “It's 4:26, I think that’s some good timing” I smiled as we began to walk. It wasn’t raining, But the sky was a cloudy gray and it definitely looked like it would be raining soon, and hard. Both of us understood full well that something could easily go wrong tonight, but this was an opportunity that neither of us were going to pass. Kits dress blew a little in the gentle breeze. “You’re so pretty,” I smiled, watching her. “Thank you w-” her voice trailed at the compliment. “Thank you, Soot” Her eyes sparkled with flattery. We turned the upcoming corner into a much larger street, the street shimmered with glowing yellow that came from the large building. “Holy shit…” Kit whispered. We began to walk towards the building, “This place is huge” I commented, It really was and I could already tell it would look stunning on the inside. We quickly made our way inside, wanting to escape the brisk wind. The interior was beautiful, there were cream colored walls and finishes decked with gold, it was very fancy yet modern. Kit was already walking ahead of me. I could tell this definitely wasn’t the room everyone was in, there was loud distant chatter coming from two doors a bit ahead of us. Kit walked up to a man holding a clipboard, he wore a suit with a green tie. “full names…” he mumbled, looking quite dissatisfied in his current position. “Kit Maverick” She spoke confidently and politely. The man didn’t check his board though, he continued to blankly stare at her. Kits expression was starting to fade. “Full names, as stated in your invite” he repeated, a little more stern this time. Kit swallowed before complying. “Kit Maeve Maverick” She held her front quite well, as I knew for a fact she wouldn’t refer to her actual name. I grabbed her shoulder softly. “Kitrina Maeve Maverick and William Patrick Soot” I nodded to the man who checked two names off of his list. “Have a wonderful night” he smiled brightly, his demeanor drastically flipping from before. “Sorry…” I whispered to her as the man opened the door for us. “Thank you, sir” Kit spoke softly. Once the two doors opened one of the most surreal sights was brought to us. There were dozens of people in the huge room, maybe even hundreds. There was a small stage to the far left and a long bar table to our direct right. A plethora of circular clothed tables were patterned through the room, and a large dance floor with different shades of people were chatting and casually conversing at a few of the tables. “Well where do we go from here?” I asked. “I guess we could have a few drinks before this thing starts” she shrugged making her way to the far corner of the bar beside us. “Don’t pick anything boring, the fees are company paid” Kit tucked in her dress before sitting down on one of the stools. I took a seat beside her admiring the golden glow the room gave off. “Come on, have a margarita with me Soot” She really didn't have to do much convincing. “Do I hear two margaritas over here?” the bartender asked, pointing over to us with a smile on his bearded face. “Sure do,” Kit replied. She turned to me to look at me for a moment before speaking again. “You remember the last time we were at the bar together?” she grinned glancing over at the man who made our drink. I scoffed looking away. “I don’t think I can forget it,” I said with a smile. “You better not” she persisted. “Enjoy these you two” the bartender returned with two tall margarita glasses. “Thank you..” we both thanked the man in unison. He nodded and returned to the other people at the bar. “What should we toast?” Kit questioned, lifting her glass. “Well, we’re here for your brother” I requested, grabbing the glass. “Alright then, after midnight we’ll all be safe, including Ty… To safety” she lifted her glass to mine and clinked the edges. “Tink…” she said quietly with a cute smile plastered on her face. “To safety” I repeated, pulled the glass to my lips. I hadn’t had a margarita in a long time, and the lime felt so good on my tongue, the tangy sting was quite refreshing. Once I had taken a large sip I placed the glass back down, carefully ruffling my hair. All of a sudden a loud echoed voice filled the room bringing the chatter to an end. “Good evening everyone” The same woman from a few days ago, standing on the stage with a microphone. “I hope you're all having a splendid evening so far” she had quite the sweet and loving impression going on. “What time is it?” I whispered to Kit. “uhm…” she stalled, looking for a clock. “4:52” she turned back to me. “Dinner will begin shortly, as will the recruitment. If your name is called please stand and make your way up to the stage” She directed. people were already seating themselves at the tables. “Let's go sit in the back or something, I'm hungry” Kit said, grabbing her drink from the counter. I stood up following closely behind her. we made our way to one of the very far tables, not exactly wanting to interact with anyone. We pulled the seats beside each other and sat down. The woman was still standing on the stage, with her dark hair done up quite high as she had a skin tight green dress. Kit set down her glass on the table as I kept mine in my hand, resting on my thigh. “Your food will be brought to you shortly” You could almost see the piercingly fake smile the woman wore. I let my free hand rest on Kits leg, holding her lovingly, not wanting to let go. She smiled, peering down at my hand. I really hoped that tonight would change things. I’ve been fighting with my thoughts for so long. I kept denying that I loved this girl, did I? I've only known her a few days, I can’t love someone in that time. But Kit wasn’t just someone, she was my everything. I'm not sure how someone could get so close to my heart in such little time, how she toyed with my feelings so often. how? Kit’s fingers entwined with mine, still sitting on her upper thigh. I wanted to look her in the eyes right now and tell her I loved her, But I couldn’t exactly just do that now could I. That’s when the thought hit me, Am I just roadkill once she gets her brother back? I felt myself go cold. I knew I couldn’t do that. “Kit what’s going to happen when we get your brother?” I turned and asked her. As I asked my question, about ten or twelve men came in holding platters of plates. “We take him to my aunt and uncles” she muttered, curiously watching as we had plates set in front of us. Neatly in the plates was a small steak, carrots and potatoes with gravy, I wasn’t going to complain. “Alright, then what about us? Are you leaving me behind once you're done with me?” Kit froze, looking at me. “Done with you..?” she said. There was a short silence between us, as we looked into eachothers eyes. “I’m not using you Soot, that may have been my intention when I first walked up to you in that bar, but I don’t think I could stomach having to be away from you” She muttered, looking a little embarrassed at her spill of emotions. She didn’t turn her head, but her eyes darted to watch me. “I don’t think I could leave you either…” I admitted. I pulled my hand away to gently grab my fork and knife, going to cut my meat. I didn’t enjoy pulling from her touch, I felt torn from her. but I needed to stop being unrealistic. “Ladies and gentlemen, now that food has been served I will begin with the recruitment” a small lady quickly sped up to the stage and handed the woman an envelope. I discreetly chewed my food watching as the woman opened the letter. “Can I please have Gedeon Bowie Jacobs on the stage?” she said happily. a man just a few tables away stood up followed by a short applause. He skipped his way up the side stairs, walking towards the woman. “This is gonna last forever…” Kit muttered before scooping food into her mouth, her eyes glued to the stage. The gears in my head were spinning. “What?” Kit asked, noticing my thoughts. Her hair had fallen just perfectly on her face, she looked so insanely beautiful. “What is it, Soot?” She had finally gained my attention. “Is there a bathroom in this place?” I raised one of my eyebrows, observing her. Kit turned to face me a little more, lifting her leg over the other. She had a prominent smirk on her face. “What’s going through your head?” She stared. My eyes fought against everything to not trail her body, her beautiful figure. With the abstinence of my answer, she stuck her bottom lip, resting her hands atop her breasts. I wanted to look, I couldn't help it. “Oh, don’t do that” I shook my head, trying to look away. “I saw a washroom when we came in,” she replied. “Alright then where is it, you're coming with me” I stood up grabbing her arm. She led us to the large washroom, it had quite the high roof and the walls were glazed with cool coloured marble. I rushed her into the nearest stall. I followed her in shutting the door as she kicked off her heels.
