Punctured
CHAPTER 9
—————
Kit impatiently walked out, not wanting to look suspicious. I glanced at my reflection in the large mirrors. I wasn’t going to deny that I looked good. I pushed my hair back a bit and straightened my glasses before stepping out. I was greeted with the crowd's silence as the woman was still calling names, it had been 45 minutes, how many people are they recruiting? “Charlotte Jaz Quinn” The name bounced off of the walls as an excited girl jumped up from her seat, her tight blonde curls bobbing on her shoulders. I took my seat next to Kit again, leaning over to lightly kiss her temple. “had to check yourself out in the mirror first huh?” she laughed quietly not wanting to interrupt the ceremony. “Well I am one attractive man aren't I?” I bragged, pointing at myself. “I guess so” she rolled her eyes, with a smile over her face. she lightly brushed off my chest in a joking manner. “You like my abs?” I continued with the bit. “Oh yeah? your abs that are definitely there?” She played along, a sweet yet shocked look on her face as she played along. “You didn’t have to go there,” I scoffed, looking back at the stage. “oh c’mon” she joked, pulling my arm. “No I’m mad at you, you said I don’t have abs” I pretended to be upset, not coming across as very serious, as I was trying to hold in giggles, a smirk painted on my face. I looked back at her. “I think your abs are great” she gave in, sighing. “Oh I know you do” I watched her with content. I liked joking with her. Her laugh was quite refreshing. she rolled her eyes with a smile, sitting back in her chair. We sat eating for a bit hearing the name calling go on and on for almost another hour. I had finished my food and had enjoyed it quite thoroughly. It was almost 8 and the recruitment was finally ending. “I wish a very sincere congratulations to all of you, please enjoy the rest of your night!” she clapped her hands together followed by dozens of other people. I weakly clapped, not exactly knowing what to do with myself. over the span of the 5 minutes, people began to disperse again. “Can we go get another drink?” I asked Kit, glancing back to the bar. “No, you’ve already had 2 margaritas, I think you're good for now” something inside me knew she was right. “If you're thirsty get water, not alcohol” she scolded me. “Fine…” I mumbled sitting up and heading to the bar. I didn’t sit down, I leaned against the bar waiting for my presence to go noticed. “What can I get you mate?” the same bartender from earlier looked over to me. “Gin,” I said. nervously looking back at the girl who sat at the table I was once at. The man grabbed a glass and filled it a little over half way. “Thanks” I said quietly as he pushed the glass down the counter. I grabbed the cold cup and went to return to the far table. “What’d you actually get?” Kit asked. “Water” I lied, sipping the clear drink. “Should I believe you?” she continued with her interrogation. “Mmhm” I sat down, setting the glass down on the table. people had come around and cleared the dishes from earlier. Kit reached for my glass and took it before I could stop her. “I-” I stuttered as she raised the cup to her lips, locking eyes with me. she swallowed, setting it back down. “Soot, you are such a liar” she scoffed. “Finish that and then you're off the liquor for the night” I didn’t answer, but I continued with the eye contact. “Got it?” she asked. “fine, fine” I caved.
Me and Kit spent an hour or so chatting, just random things. I paid close attention to the stories she told, as I was enthralled in her past, present and future, wanting to learn as much about her as I could possibly cram into my scattered brain. “Alright your turn you ask me a question” I said, pushing down the last bit of my gin. “Ok, uhm…” she thought, looking away in thought. “Tell me about your first kiss,” she grinned, crossing her legs. “My god…” I had a difficult time looking back on it, it was somewhat of an embarrassing memory in my head. “You want all these little romance stories” I shook my head before answering her. “So…” I was stalling myself. “Okay so it was this girl I think I met at a party like maybe a month before, and I really liked this girl” I was struggling with fully finding the story that was buried so deep in my mind. “This story makes me sound like a proper dickhead” I scoffed, feeling my cheeks go pink. “I'll wait,” Kit said. “I think- we kissed in a hammock, and- I sound so wank, my god” Kit laughed softly at my embarrassment. “We were in the hammock and I think I kissed her after we counted stars or something, cliche I know” I smiled. “yes very cliche, but cute” she chuckled, tipping her ice water up. “What about you?” I added. “Mmh” she swallowed the water and set her glass back down. “In around year 9, there was this boy who was very shy. I remember other kids picking on him for being a little bit of a dork but I thought he was cute” I nodded listening to her storytelling. “Kids would make fun of his smile or something I'm not fully sure, but he was quite insecure. Anyways, one day he was sitting alone on the bench outside, so I went to sit with him. I told him I thought he was pretty and he just out of nowhere kissed me, and I actually think that was the last time I saw him, he must’ve moved just days after” she shrugged. “Have you ever seen him since?” I asked. “Nope, I hope he’s doing better though, he was quite the fretful guy” I glanced off, looking at the people in the room. “I used to be quite confident in highschool, but I think that’s drained away at this point” I admitted. “I still think you’ve got a bit in you” Kit spoke. I turned my head to her. Her eyes were so effortlessly bright, so calming. “I wanna hear about you in highschool” I requested, crossing my arms. “I'm not sure, I've never been all that good at judging myself…” she thought for a moment. “Well I lived with my aunt and uncle, and I was really into photography for a little bit, I remember my uncle went out and bought me a polaroid camera as an ‘early birthday gift’ that was 3 months before my actual birthday” she laughed. Fondly I smiled, she looked so happy and reminiscent. “My friends loved taking pictures of me specifically, although I wasn't very keen on the idea of having my face plastered all over, I bet those photos are still in my old room” she waved her finger in memory. “You’ll have to show them to me” I appreciated the thought in her memories, she seemed so excited looking back on her childhood, and I loved that. “Alright your turn, you tell me something about young little Soot” I had a lot to look back on, the past was one of my most clung onto things. “When I was in year 7, that was when I met Tommy, he was in year 3 and his mom would have me walk him home every day, and I'd have to hold his hand every time it was icy out. That boy was so pale that his nose, cheeks and ears would go bright red in the cold, but he would never complain about it, he would just waddle on the ice and shiver. I Think he made it his goal to always tell me what the weather was like, ‘wiwbuh i’m cowd’ every single day” Telling the story, I realized how much I missed him. “You should tell him that story” She smiled. “I can't anymore” I was now coming to find out I had never told him that story. “Well, if you ever get the chance… you tell him” in that moment I made a promise to myself, and a promise to her. No matter where or why, If I ever saw Tommy again, I would tell him that story. “Promise…” I set my hand on hers. The casual music in the room faded away as we looked at each other, and coming to replace the last song was music a lot slower. Kit’s eyes shot to the people who began to pair. Now was my time. “Kit?” I asked for her attention. She slowly looked at me. I stood up and held my hand out. I took a deep breath before I lost time. “Will you dance with me?” I asked quite confidently. Kit stared at my hand hesitantly before gently grabbing it to stand up. Her lack of an answer told me what I needed to know. I courteously led her to the dance floor where people had already started to embrace each other in the music. My nerves were on edge. I walked her to an empty corner of the floor letting go of her hand to softly grip her waist, she reached up to set her arms to rest on my shoulders. I leaned my head down as our noses touched. “You've been quite the gentleman today Soot,” She said quietly. “Have I?” I teased. We both started to sway, back and forth. I felt so safe with her, so complete. I had never been so attracted to everything about someone before. I had been denying the weight of my feelings for her this whole time, but I didn’t want to stop myself anymore, I couldn't keep forcing myself away from feeling the way I did. Because I love her. I loved Kit with everything I had. “I wish we could do this all the time,” She whispered. “Well maybe we can,” I replied. I couldn’t take any of this for granted, I couldn’t fathom the idea of losing her. I felt so good finally letting myself bask in her affection. I slowly shut my eyes while listening to the music. her forehead eventually rested against mine. “Anything you’ll ever need, I'll be here” I comforted her with my promises, they weren’t empty, they were quite truthful, probably one of the truest things I’ve ever told someone. “Anything?” she whispered again. “Anything, my love” I was so lost, so in love, I was falling and I was so infatuated with it. I couldn’t see her in the dark of my eyes but I knew that smile was stuck to her face. “I've had such an amazing night with you, Soot” The music flowed like feathers, feathers that fell from the ceiling and tickled our skin as they fluttered to the floor. “I've enjoyed my night with you as well, I don’t think anything could make it worse” I told her, pulling her just a little closer. It was already nearing 10 o’clock. Slow songs switched and played over time, but still we swayed holding onto what we had of each other, we danced for close to a half hour. I never wished to let her go, I could just have her in my arms forever, I wouldn’t complain if that was the reality. I opened my eyes and lifted up my head to see her face. She looked up, confused at my movements. I rested my lips on her forehead, slowly pulling away and setting my chin atop her head. Before closing my eyes again I noticed something in the distant crowd. It was the woman from earlier, she wore a large fluffy black coat and smoked a cigarette. She was followed by three other men who led a small child out of the building and the woman as their leader. The child wore black pants, a dress shirt and a bow tie. He looked unaware of his surroundings as he marvelled at the golden features of the room. I felt the feathers from earlier disappear, fall dead at my feet. “Kit” I froze. “What? What’s wrong?” my head was locked on the boy. “That him?” I asked, my heart slipping further into my chest. Kit, still confused, searched where I looked, her eyes eventually landing on the boy. Her breathing suddenly hitched. “Yes…” her hands returned to her sides as we pulled away from each other. “But it’s still another hour or so till midnight” the gears were spinning in her head. “She’s trying to renege on the deal…” Kit said coldly. “Well we’ve gotta go then don’t we!” I urged her. Without the exchange of words Kit took my hand and began to rush out. Trying to get as close to the group as we could. we hastily pushed our way through both sets of doors, The tedious rain outside hitting us. The outside world was a dark blue, the dark sapphire glowing within everything the sky touched. the people were just turning to an alleyway directly to our right. I started towards them but was stopped by Kit. She grabbed my jacket “Don’t. You go down there and you die” her words had startled me. “It's not midnight, we back out and we pay the price, they don’t see consequences as an issue in their eyes” she spoke in power. “We wait over there” She pointed to another alley across the large empty street. Kit pulled her heels off holding them both in her other hand before setting her way down the street. My glasses were speckled with droplets and my hair was already damp. We finally reached the alley, quickly stepping into the dark outdoor hallway. It really wasn't very cold, it was actually kinda warm. “Fuck…” Kit swore to herself, her hands on her hips as she paced the concrete. “We’re gonna work this out alright, maybe they wanted to be out here earlier” I tried to distract her, bringing something positive to the table. “What time is it?” She asked impatiently. I pulled out my phone, my screen dampening the moment I pulled it into the environment. “11:17” I replied, looking back at her. “Guess we just gotta wait then” she muttered. She leaned back on the brick wall, tossing her heels to the side. We both eventually sat down on the ground, not caring all that much for our outfits anymore. Kits makeup was running down her cheeks as the rain carried it from her eyes. “You know…” I said out of breath, she turned her head to look at me “Even with running makeup you still look beautiful” She closed her eyes and grabbed my hand, squeezing it as tight as she could. The moon reflected so faintly on her wet skin. I rubbed my face with my other hand feeling the scratchy hairs on my chin as my glasses sat overtop my hand. I felt the feeling begin to disappear as my glasses were pulled from my face. “What are you-” I looked over, watching as Kit adjusted my glasses on the bridge of her nose. She looked around for a bit, blinking. “You're pretty blind” She laughed. The glasses were definitely a bit big for her, but they looked cute. “Not too badly” I replied. The rain was getting thicker. “They look nice on you” I complimented, that’s all I felt capable of doing, whatever she did was so perfect in my eyes. “Thank you, but I think they suit you a lot better” I was reminded of just days ago.
“I just think Soot really suits you”
I thought about the quote for a moment. “Just because it suits me doesn't mean it’s meant for me…” I told her. I wasn’t talking about the glasses. “Okay, just know I like them” She smiled, pulling them off her face, carefully returning them back to my own. I shut my eyes as the glasses now rested over my ears and nose. There was a long pause before I decided to break it. “Do you know my name?” I asked quite forwardly, wanting her answer with everything in me. “Yes, I do,” Kit replied. The already tight grip on my hand was getting harder. “Then why don’t you say it?” I spoke desperately. There was a long rain-filled pause. “I don’t know…” She muttered. That wasn’t the truth and I didn’t think I would be able to get the truth out of her. “When you do call me by my name, just know that it’s greatly appreciated” I pulled my head forward again to stare at the opposite brick wall in front of us. “What's the time?” She asked again, trying to flip the conversation, sounding upset. I quickly looked at the time on my phone. “11:34” I sighed. The both of us were lost in thought. I felt empty, I hope that she doesn’t feel empty. But that was a distant dream, I was tired. Not tired like I needed to sleep, but tired mentally, burnt out. “KITRINA” A shrill female voice echoed from the streets. Kit flinched at the yelling of her outgrown label. “What’s she want? we still have another 20 minutes?” I said as we stood up, Kit's hand fleeing my grip. “Stay here” Kit instructed as she stepped out into the street. “Hey!” I grabbed her arm and pulled her back. “What are you doing?” I demanded of her. “I'm going to help my brother,” She said. “No, we still have 20 minutes,” I replied. Kit was getting angry at this point. “Let go of me” She tried to shake her arm from my hand but it was no use. “No, you're going to get hurt” I held her in place. “Let me help him! I can handle myself” She cursed at me. “No Kit, I know you! you know deep down that you're going to go out there to get him and you're going to be met with a far more vast reality!” I tried my hardest to convince her otherwise. She stood quietly for a second, fuming. “You don’t know me Soot…” Her voice had shed its anger. I stepped closer to her looking down at her helpless face. “Don’t I?” I breathed. She stared at me silently. My hand loosened on her arm as I let it fall to my side, it was up to her now, not me. She turned to walk back to the street, the rain absolutely pouring now. “And Kit…” I called back, standing weakly in the heavy rain. And to my surprise she turned to look back at me. Her face was stone cold, but vulnerable. “My name is Wilbur.” I said solemnly. She blinked slowly, still looking at me. She took a deep breath finally turning back to walk away. In the middle of the street was the boy, helplessly standing in the very middle, he was soaked with rain and rested with his head down. Behind the boy was that same woman, holding a large umbrella over herself, leaving the boy drenched in his dress clothes. I had grown to hate this woman, her face, her mannerisms, her voice, everything. Though Kit didn’t walk straight up to the boy, she cautiously stood in front of them. Ty curiously looked up at his sister. I couldn’t hear the talking over the rain, but they went on for a few minutes. Once those few minutes came to their close Kit fell to her knees hugging the boy into her arms, caressing his wet hair. My heart began to feel warmer. We did it. She picked the boy up, holding him to her chest, running back to the alley. Once she got close enough I held my arms out and gently grabbed her shoulder. “Are you okay?” I asked as she set down the boy. “Yeah I think we’re okay” she struggled to breathe deep enough. “We did it” I smiled down at her. Before she could react the lady spoke again. “Kitrina, Honey can I see you for just a minute dear?” She froze, her face falling. She nervously swallowed looking down at the kid. “If something happens, take him to house number 6 on chestnut street, alright?” My heart was sinking again. “I-” I stumbled, not knowing what to do. “Keep Ty safe” She took a step forward, leaning upwards to slowly kiss me. I didn’t kiss her back though, it’s not that I didn’t want to, but I wasn’t able to muster the force. I couldn't let her go, but I needed to. “I will…” I whispered. We were both soaking wet, scared and unprepared. But we couldn’t back out. Kit let go of my face and returned back to the street. Keep Ty safe. I looked down at the small child who looked up at me. “Hiya mate… here take my hand” I held my hand out for the boy, in which he took. His hand was probably 5 times smaller than mine. I quickly led the boy behind a dumpster before giving him a few instructions. “My name is Wilbur, can you tell me your name?” I sat him down on the concrete, his hands around his legs. “Tyler…” the boy fretted. “I'm not going to hurt you, I’m your sister's friend” The boy nodded at me with wide eyes. “I need you to stay right here for me okay? No matter what happens I need you to stay right here” I directed him. He wasn’t very talkative, he just quietly nodded. “And I promise, no matter what I’ll be back for you” before I could look back to see if Kit was alright, the boy held out his pinky finger for me. “Pinky promise?” he asked. It took no hesitation, I wrapped my considerably larger pinky finger around his. “Pinky promise” I tried not to cry at his innocence. Just as I was watching the child there were two bloodcurdling ‘BANGS!’ Was she shot?! Officially in that second my lungs stopped working. I stumbled to stand up as I ran out of the alley. “FUCK!” I yelled at myself. “KIT!” I called before I reached the opening, a car sped away and a girl lay motionless on the puddle covered ground. I kept running. I got closer and closer with each pounding step I took. Eventually I was close enough to fall on my knees beside her. The rain came down on us so hard. “Hey! Hey, listen, can you hear me?” I begged, my shaking hands cupping her face. “Kit can you hear me?” her head so slowly turned, her eyes barely staying open. The display of pain in front of me was enough to tear me apart, and it was doing so. I looked at her body, she had been shot in the upper left shoulder and lower torso. I couldn't stand the look of it, of her in pain. “I- hey…” she attempted to speak. “No, don’t try to talk” I had tears streaking my face. She was lying in a large puddle, not of rain. Her blood was soaking into my already wet pants. "I know this hurts, but you have to stay awake.” I pleaded. I tried to cover her wounds, wanting to stop her fast bleeding. “I-” She choked and tried to go on. “No, don't talk, my love” I cried. She began to flinch and cry as well. “I'm going to get you help, okay?” I winced and sniffed, looking at the struggling girl. I pushed her hair back as gently as possible wanting to be careful with the now fragile girl. "I can't give up on you, so please don't give up on yourse-'' my begging was softly interrupted as she weakly covered my lips with her pointer finger. “I love you, Wilbur Soot,” She wept. The rain muted itself and The world paused. My blood went cold and our eyes locked. never once did I think i’d hear my name from her mouth. “What…” I whispered. My ears were ringing and my tears burned my cheeks, “Wilbur, I love you, and I am… so sorry I didn’t tell you earlier” she shut her eyes, her hand brushing my face. “Don't close your eyes, please don't close your eyes!" But my begging was no use at all. She eventually slipped out of consciousness. “NO! KIT LOOK AT ME” I wailed, just gently shaking her. My heart was so full of hurt, fear and anger. She didn’t respond. “Please dammit…” I whispered, my head falling. We were sitting in an endless sea of rain, blood and tears. I sat with my darling, my life and my bride, In her sleep there by the red sea.
