Today started off like any normal day. My name is Skylar, I'm fifteen years old living in the city that never sleeps, New York City. I live in an apartment building near Central Park with my mom. Life has been normal for the most part, however these last few years have been tense with my mom's rule. You see, I was born in the state of Kansas and I grew up there for ten years with a loving mom and dad. My mom used to tell us to be back home by nine pm otherwise bad things would happen.
One night my dad had a late meeting at his work, and he was on his way home when he crashed his car. He passed away on the scene according to the police report. Which sounds normal, until you learn that his real cause of death was due to a stab wound to his heart. It was no ordinary death, and whatever my mom saw in the police station really freaked her out. We ended up moving to the big city shortly after. According to mom, it wasn't safe there anymore for us and she believed being in a big city with millions of people would be safer.
With all that though we are here. I always dreamt of living in the big city, becoming a famous artist or photographer. That was before I moved here and had to endure high school. I thought I would be able to make one friend in this huge city, but let's just say coming from a state mostly covered with wheat to a city mostly covered with people doesn't make things easy. In fact high school has been hell. I get picked on all the time for my accent, people bully me for my outfits, and I'm made fun of for being in high school and having a 'bedtime' as some call it due to my mom's rule of being home by nine.
Thank goodness though it was the end of school and a Friday at that. I was walking from my last class to my locker to get my books out before leaving the school. As I got to my locker, I suddenly felt a spit ball hit the back of my head followed by a couple of snickers. I turned around to see the popular group made up of the football team and cheerleaders. I just sighed and turned back around grabbing my books quickly. As soon as I closed my locker I felt tons of bunched up paper being thrown. I walked down the hall with my head down as the whole school laughed and pointed at me. I began to run out of the school building and through the yard where I met my mom. She could tell something was off.
"Skylar? Is everything okay?" She asked gently.
I simply sighed and shook my head as we walked off from the school. "Same old stuff. I had a spit ball hit my head three times today. Then on my way out of school they threw paper balls at me and the whole school was laughing and pointing at me. I hate it here. Five years and I'm still the outcast of the whole city." I said in frustration.
"Oh sweetie... I'm sorry, but it's safer here for us. I miss our home too but... after your father died I couldn't risk you facing the same death." She said softly as she rubbed my shoulder.
"I understand mom... but honestly I could die anywhere at any time... what I don't understand is why you are so freaked about the whole nine o'clock thing." I said with a little frustration.
My mom looked at me with a confused look like she couldn't understand what I said. "Skylar.. have you forgotten the story I told you as a kid? You have to be in the house-"
"In the house before nine pm or Shredder will come for you.. yes mom I remember the story, but that is all it is.. it was a story to keep me in line.. much like the boogie man or those creature legends people tell to keep people in line." I said with a little annoyance.
My mother just sighed and shook her head. "It was never just a story Skylar. It is a true story... passed down in our family for generations." She stated as we kept walking through town. It was now five pm.
"Mom... that story is ancient.. Literally! It came from ancient Japan. We are neither ancient nor in Japan." I said as we walked into my mom's work.
She works as a hair stylist for a small company in New York. It is owned by a Japanese family who are neighbors of ours and apparently knew my grandparents from Japan.
