"Hell does not sleep"
Lucius leaned against a lamppost, looking up at the obsidian sky. Alia was next to him, breathing heavily. He could sense her anger and fear and would have liked nothing better than to put an arm around her shoulder, tell her that everything was alright, and bring her back to the Institute. But he knew that it would be incredibly cruel to lie to her again.
Julian was desperately trying to organize the flock of confused Shadowhunters, without telling them that the Queen of hell was coming to kill them all in a few minutes.
And that it was, once again, his fault.
He thought back to when he had first met her. She had been wearing a black dress, walking next to her father. She had spoken in his head, told him that the reason Magnus has wanted him to be there, was to try to animate her to stay with him.
Ana had taken his powers, transported him and herself into Edom with the help of her father, who had turned out to be Lucifer. Then, she had stolen her best friends memory and left her with him, with only the task to "take care of her".
Hadn't he done that? He had helped train Alia, bound their souls together, so he would always be able to protect her.
He hadn't. Her memories were back.
And Ana was going to kill him for 1) making her a Shadowhunter and 2) because she despised him."Why did you train me?" Alia asked quietly. Her gaze was distant, as she looked over Times square.
"Because it was the right thing to do. When you woke up, you were so confused, you had no idea who you were and what had happened. Ana cared about you very much. She loved you to a point where I felt her pain when she left you. I couldn't deliver you back to your life. I just couldn't."
"But even though you cared so much, you still managed to piss her off and make her come here" Alia raised an eyebrow.
"I've been told it's one of my special talents."
She almost smiled.
Lucius smiled sadly. " But the again, that's not the whole truth. You make me strong. Before you were my parabatai, I was easily the weakest Shadowhunter in the Institute. I was helpless, hopeless. You saved me, and as thanks, I lied to you for so long."
Alia opened her mouth to answer, but she didn't have the chance, because at that moment, they were both thrown back by a gust of wind. Black fog clouded their vision, making it almost impossible for them to open their eyes and stand up.
Then, as suddenly as it had come, the fog cleared. In the middle of the square now stood a tall figure, all in black.
Lucius gripped Alia's hand. It was ice cold.
Darkness enveloped them and they both found themselves at the figures feet.
"Well, well," a cold, merciless voice said.
"Care to join me?"
And with that, she drove a blade through Lucius' heart.
