Alyssa Liu wasn't a loser, but she wasn't popular. She was just kind of there in the middle. Sure, her pretty looks and her kind behavior — unless someone got on her bad side, then she wasn't so sweet — could make her hang around people like Yasmine and Moon, but she didn't care about shit like that. She did care about her two best friends, though, who were considered losers — Eli Moskowitz and Demetri Alexopoulos.
If Alyssa was being honest, she was better friends with Eli. Although he was soft-spoken and quite shy, he always managed to come out of his shell when he was around. Alyssa and Eli just got each other.
And then Miguel Diaz arrived in the Valley, bringing with him a resurgence of a karate dojo called Cobra Kai. Along with it, Eli became a totally different person than what Alyssa remembered. He dyed his hair (which, yes, she helped with, but she didn't know it was going to turn out like this), got tattoos (yes, she was also there when he got the hawk tattoo), and started to go by the name of Hawk (Alyssa was never going to call him that, by the way.)
Right in front of her eyes, Alyssa watches as Eli gets farther and farther away from the boy she used to know. And in turn, they get farther and farther away from each other. Karate changes him for the worst, but it also starts to change her for the better when she joins Cobra Kai's rivaling dojo, Miyagi-Do, with Demetri. The tensions are high, the waters are rough, betrayals are being thrown left and right, and nobody knows who's going to make it out of this rivalry alive.
However, through it all, they're still Alyssa and Eli. They couldn't be separated for that long even if their dojos hated each other, because they were like opposite ends of a magnet. They've never just been friends, they've always been something more. But times come when even though it seems like they'll crash and burn, they'll come back together again. Because even through the insanity, he's still her clarity.
