Zane
I had a sixth sense.
A strong intuition.
The heaviest of urges telling me something was wrong.
Something was wrong with Isabella.
She was meant to have returned home forty-five minutes ago, and while I was usually lenient with her punctuality, something wasn't right this time.
Between the fact that I hadn't run a background check on the boy, and the fact that Isabella hadn't contacted me once despite my orders to do so, I knew.
I stared at the glass on the counter in front of me, fists trembling and my lungs fighting to take in a breath of air. My head was my greatest asset yet also my biggest liability; I couldn't think clearly unless I was calm, and the overwhelmed state I was in, my mind telling me my sister was everything but safe, meant I was not calm.
At all.
"Her phone isn't even ringing, maybe it's off? Or dead?", Caleb paced back and forth, his phone being squeezed so tightly in his grasp I thought the screen would crack, "I'm going out there, Chase is circling in his car with Nix too- you need to focus, and breathe". The way my breathing was being restricted told me that was easier said than done.
"I can't- she just-,", I pressed a hand on my chest and closed my eyes, a shiver flying down my spine when his hand rested on my shoulder and squeezed.
"I know", he hummed, "but you need to focus Zane, we need you right now- she needs you". I wasn't a stranger to being needed by my younger siblings.
"I can't breathe", I shook my head and coughed, the invisible hands tightening around my throat; I wanted nothing more than to be out there, searching for my sister, making sure she was fucking safe, but my anxiety levels were compromising all rational thought right now.
"Hey, hey", Caleb grabbed my hand from my chest and pressed it against his own, holding it down with his palm, "I'm right here". He took my other hand and pressed it against my chest, the rapid hammering of my heart being the only thing I could feel.
"Isabella-,", I paused, coughing again, "she's-,".
"Being looked for", he filled in for me, "feel my heartbeat yeah? You're okay".
I was far from okay, and while I would've preferred to have been sat in silence right now, I knew Caleb was trying to calm me as quickly as possible so I could get out there and find my sister. And as soon as she filled my mind again, everything intensified as black dots clouded my vision- god I was gonna die. I tried to focus on Caleb's heartbeat against my palm, the steady drumming of it making me zone out everything else for a moment.
"Good", he encouraged, not moving from his position at all, "I'm right here". I closed my eyes, managing to let a decent amount of oxygen into my lungs before exhaling through my nose slowly.
"Zane?", my eyes opened and met the slouched frame of Alexander instantly, "what's wrong? What's happening?".
His clothes were creased, hair disheveled, he'd definitely just woken up. Seeing the worried look on his face was enough to somewhat bring me back to reality, I glanced into Caleb's eyes and he nodded slightly.
