Chapter 3 - Welcome to Dauntless

As my blood sizzles on the coals, a cheer rises from the very left side of the room. The Dauntless. I turn from the bowls and face the Dauntless. I smile, this is where I will get the life I've always dreamt of.

I take confident strides down to meet them and even my heels can't deter my confidence now. As I take my seat with them, many come congratulate me and I can't but feel as if I should've been born to this faction.

As I sit down, I look over to Amity. They're all whispering and I can see Rosiela, sitting there looking like someone just made her eat something bad. Of course. What was I expecting. Rosiela's reputation will plummet because I've what I've done and she's not happy about it. But I don't regret my decision. Rosiela needs to know that the world isn't a wish granting factory and that I'm not selfless enough to put her little reputation before me.

As the last 16 year old chooses, the rest of Dauntless start standing up to leave. I stand with the other transfers as we file our way out of the room. We leave first and we just so happen to pass by. Trying to keep my eyes locked on the ground was a laughable endeavor. As much as I dislike my little sister, she is family, I have to see her this last time because she as hell won't be at Dauntless on visiting day, in fact, I'm not even sure she's allowed to come, she's not a parent.

As I scan the crowd of Amity, I look at many familiar faces for the last time. My old friends, adults I used to know, the faction that brought me up after no one else was left for me except Rosiela. Then Rosiela turned on me so it was Amity who raised me and I look at people as a way of saying, 'I'm sorry I had to leave you'.

My eyes found Rosiela's and we look at each other before Rosiela turns away. But I swear she gave me the tiniest hint of a smile before she turned to the other Amity girls. I hope that was a smile. She hasn't smiled at me for a really long time. It would be nice to take my sister's smile to my new beginning.

The Dauntless press me forward, away from the only family I have left, away from the faction that basically raised me. But I don't feel betrayal. I feel free. Free from the restraints of Amity. No more peace serum for me.

I look around at the other transfers who, like before we were choosing, have a mix of emotions. Some like the Abnegation girl look like they committed a crime. Some are sickly and pale and some are straight out confident. What a mix we have here.

As we descend the stairs, everyone suddenly starts running. There are screams of delight as the whole faction starts racing down the stairs. Some of the other transfers have an expression of 'what the hell is going on', but I don't. This is the life I have dreamt about. Adventurous, having something exciting around every corner.

I forget about everyone else and just go with the flow, taking off with the other Dauntless. Who cares that my feet will be sorely blistered because of my heels. Who cares if the red velvet like material on the heels will be scuffed after this. I won't ever wear these colours again, so I couldn't care less. I silently thank my brain for not choosing stilettos that morning as I race with the Dauntless toward the train tracks.

One by one, I see the Dauntless start piling into the train and I grin. I've watched them get on the train for ages. Since I was a child I marvelled at the way they just leap onto a moving train. The main problem here is how to get myself onto a train carriage.

Watching their technique, I see that most of them are sprinting a few hundred meters behind the nearest train carriage and then taking a leap of faith and pray that your foot will land on the stand. Well that's what I'm going to do.

I break off into my fastest sprint and I see the train carriage come up before me. I'm going to do this I tell myself. I've worked so hard to get here, I can't let this take me down. I don't care that my feet are screaming with the pain from blisters. I am going to get on that train.
