Warning: miniscule mention of blood and a little mention of Eveyn's upbringing
It was barely light outside when Evelyn's eyes opened. The view from her window was dusky, trees rattling in the breeze and a light fog of condensation lay across the glass pane. She hadn't meant to fall asleep on the floor, partway through reading her book. The last thing she could remember happening in it was Daphne marrying the prince, glancing at the duke with his betrothed wife the entire wedding. And the last thing she remembered happening in her life was talking to Alex. He had told her to get some sleep, and while it wasn't her intention, she did.
Her sleep, however, couldn't have been for long. The sky outside was still dark and she hadn't yet caught that feeling of exhaustion. and maybe she never would. she pulled herself up from the hard floor, almost missing the feeling of it pressing against her bones as she stood up, the full wave of tiredness hitting her.
she slugged over to the mirror, glancing over herself. It had been a while since she had been able to have a good look at herself. and a lot can change in two years.
her hair had gotten longer, her cheeks and jaw was chiselled in slightly, her lips had filled up and her eyes were a bit wider. but under her eyes, the darkness was something she was unable to ignore, and the bruise on her jaw had slightly faded, but was still prominent. she reached her hand up to graze her fingers over the dark patch of skin, refusing to show any pain at all as she pressed her finger harshly into it. It hurts a lot less when you do it yourself.
she shrugged off the pyjamas Raven had given her, despite how soft they felt, and slipped herself into some of the clothes that looked a little more her speed. plain cream sweatpants, a matching tank top and white trainers. simple, and perfect for her.
it wasn't as if she wasn't glad Raven had given her clothes to wear. it was undeniably kind of her, but she didn't really feel like wearing dresses and skirts. she felt a little too exposed for this time or day.
She walked out of her room, skipping down the stairs without a sound and slipped out of the front door, hoping some fresh air would wake her up. She sat on the concrete steps that led up to the door she had gone through, looking out across the large land that surrounded the house. Beyond that, forest areas circled them as well. how many places in there would she hide if anything were to happen? How many places could someone be hiding right now? just sitting there, waiting for her gaze to move, just long enough for them to take their aim...
her thoughts were interrupted when she heard the large door open and shut. Were they lurking inside this whole time? She stood up and whipped her head around so fast that she felt a burning sensation travelling down her neck afterwards.
"just me. again."
Alex. She had never been thankful to see anyone before, but she was now. It felt weird. wrong.
her breathing settled down slightly, "you are sneaky person. you know that, yes?" she asked him, still standing up.
he let out a boyish laugh, small but loud enough she heard it from fifteen foot away, "yeah, i know." he looked over her frame quickly, "aren't you freezing?"
she didn't move, "always freezing." she mumbled, now turning back around and sitting back on the cold concrete.
Alex walked over and sat down next to her, legs a lot further down than hers, dropping a few steps down while hers were pulled up to her chest, her fingers toying with her shoelaces. She could feel his eyes burning into her, but she refused to move her eyes from where they sat. He tugged his zip up hoodie off of his shoulders, "here." He told her quietly, "put this on."
