The castle was abuzz with whispers floating through the halls, bouncing off the walls and echoing on to the next set of ears. No one dared to speak more than a whisper out of fear. It had been very tense lately. The castle staff were previously too overjoyed to have a new addition living in the castle. They didn't realize how domineering she was. The demands were given swiftly and frequently. If they weren't done to her standard that you were as good as dead. That combined with the attitude of the prince was more than the staff could take. It had them all holding their breath.
The king had assured the castle staff that they could carry on as usual but it was hard to do so when Beomgyu came walking down the hallways with his sharp glare. He had been angry for a long while. It had been no less than two weeks since the staff had heard him say a word.
Beomgyu responded to no one. Not even his brother, and especially not his brothers wife. Jiwoo was frustrating. She acted as if she were the sole monarch of the kingdom after just getting married. That's why Beomgyu hadn't spoken a word to her. He hated her attitude. He had also been taking this time to reflect on his feelings. It was hard to describe why he felt this way.
It's like he was a child with a toy that he didn't want. He was playing with the toy even though he didn't care for it even in the slightest, and then another child came and snatched the toy right from his hands. He wanted the toy back and he wanted it now. He didn't care how he had to get it.
Not a week prior, he had sent a carrier pigeon with a note for the prince. A challenge. Should his challenge be ignored, he would have war.
He wanted his toy. He wanted it now.

"My lord! Prince Soobin?! Sir Jeon! Is Prince Soobin present?" Kai asked, bursting into the training yard.
"No, he isn't. What's so important, kid? A piece of parchment?" Sir Jeon asked. The knight approached the page, moving his hand to snatch the paper from Kai. Kai used the one advantage he had over Sir Jeon. His height. He held the note up in the air as he left, rushing through the halls to find the prince. The mail was urgent, he knew because he snooped.
He had tried the princess's door, but the princess was currently in the library with Mr Kim. He'd seen them talking as he passed by. So far, the only person he'd had no luck finding the person the letter was addressed to.
"Prince Soobin! Come out of hiding! Excuse me, have you seen the prince? You haven't happened to have seen the prince, have you? Do you have any clue where he could be?" His questions were fast and barely even answered before he ran off to get help from other people.
When he finally found the prince, he was in the kitchens speaking to the staff about their stock and what supplies they needed, as well as delivering tea to the princess's room.
"My lord! You must see this," Kai panted, holding out the letter to the prince.
Soobin gestured for the kitchen staff to go back to their work and put his arm around Kai's shoulder, taking the note and leading Kai somewhere more private.
"'Prince Choi Soobin of the Eastern Kingdom, I send you this letter to notify you of my betrothal to Princess (Y/N) of the Northern Kingdom', what?" Soobin questioned as he read the note aloud. "'Her father promised her to me many moons before you even knew of her. I am aware of your supposed 'betrothal' to the Princess and I object. I wish to challenge you for the hand of the princess. Know that you are free to decline my challenge, but should you do so, I will bring war and chaos among you and your people. If I do not receive a letter from you in three weeks time, I shall consider my challenge denied. I am not afraid of you, nor am I afraid of spilling blood. I am a warrior and I will have the princess. Signed Prince Choi Beomgyu of the Western Kingdom.'" Soobin finished reading, quirking a brow at Kai. "This letter is childish and absurd. What sort of prince would do this?" Soobin scoffed, tearing the letter to shreds, tossing it in a waste bin.
