Bright blue fades into a brilliant yellow, spotted with pink stripes as the sun starts its descent into the depths of the horizon.
“The sunset looks so pretty from up here,” I mutter aloud as I watch it from our position on the small plateau of rock overlooking the camp.
“Yeah,” Newt agrees from his position next to me. Newt, Minho, Frypan and I have been sitting out here for about an hour now after Thomas left for the medical tent along with Brenda and the doctor, Mary.
As Mary explained to us, it turns out that while Thomas was working for WICKED he was secretly passing along information to the Right Arm. This is the reason he was thrown into the maze; as punishment for what he did.
I look out over the camp again to see Aris, Harriet and Sonya all laughing together around a campfire.
Footsteps behind us alerts me to Thomas who has joined us on our plateau. He sits down next to Newt and fiddles with a small wooden figurine as we watch the sunset. He fidgets with that a lot. I wonder where he got it from?
“I wish Alby could’ve seen this,” Newt mutters.
“And Winston,” I mumble.
“And Chuck,” Thomas whispers. Newt looks over at him and the wooden figurine.
“He’d be proud of you, you know, Tommy,” Newt says, giving him a small smile. Thomas nods.
“Yeah.”
“Hey Aris!” Frypan calls out having spotted the boy. Aris raises his arm in a friendly wave.
“Hey guys!” He calls back. I grin at how happy he’s gotten. It’s strange seeing such a new side of the usually quiet and solemn boy.
“I like that kid,” Frypan chuckles as he turns back to us.
“Yeah. I still don’t trust him, though,” Minho says, his face serious for a moment before it splits into a wide smile. We all chuckle as we watch the bright smile on Aris’s face as he animatedly waves his arms around, mid telling a story to Harriet and Sonya.
“Hey, where’s Teresa?” Thomas speaks up. I tilt my head slightly in confusion.
“You mean Tessy?” I wonder. The boys stare at me for a moment with confused eyes before bursting out into laughter.
“You’ve been with us for a couple of weeks now and you still don’t know her name?” Newt manages to say in between laughs.
“Well it’s not like we were ever exactly introduced. Anyway, the name is stuck now, Tessy suits her,” I say with a shrug. The boys let out another laugh.
“Tessy’s up there by the way,” I tell Thomas, turning around and pointing over at her silhouette where she stands on the flat rock of the higher cliff.
