Morrigan smiled at her little stuffed rabbit. Emmett had been her best friend since she was too young to remember. He was soft, with the sort of well-worn fur that showed the two generations of love he'd received. He had once had a little red-and-white striped waistcoat, but it had vanished back when Emmett had belonged to Morrigan's mother. At sometime or another, he had disappeared into the attic, and the smell had never quite washed out.

There were many things Morrigan loved about Emmett. The way he always seemed to listen when she told him her secrets and fears, how his little black button eyes looked just like hers, how he was just the right size to sit in the chair next to hers at dinner without anyone noticing.

But what Morrigan loved the most about Emmett was how she could feel her mother's love for her in every frayed thread of the little rabbit's being.
