It was Monday. 4 weeks since he met April. 3 weeks since his life change for the better. The magical chance.
He had Biology today, normally he was excited. To see April of course. But today he was anxious and nervous, because he wanted to talk to April about Drake. Tell her she deserved better, tell her that it wasn't okay, tell her that he was a piece of shit. Tell her that he would never do that, tell her that everything would be alright.
He walked to class, rehearsing his speech to her.
"April, Drake isn't good for you. You deserve better. No man should ever hurt a woman."
He sounded like his father. He laughed. His father had caught his mom in bed with someone else. This is what he had to say about finding them:
"I wanted to kill them both, but you never put your hands on a woman. So I beat the shit out of the guy twice! Once for sleeping with my wife, and again, of course pretending that he was your mother."
It was a sad, but hilarious story. He still talked to his mother, but it was rare. She'd call just to ask the same: "how are you?", "How's school?", "um..how's your...uh...father?".
He hadn't seen his mother since the day he left Colorado. She also never tried to see him either.
He reached his biology classroom door, walked in, and found that April was already in the room. She was smiling, dressed on point, and her hair in a French braid. A purple t shirt, with slightly ripped black skinny jeans. She looked like a band t shirt models for shirts on the Hot Topic website. All that she was missing were tattoos.
She saw him and freaked out.
"Jasper! Come here hurry! We need to talk!", yelled April.
"Did she leave him? What was she happy about?", thought Jasper.
He walked to his station, sat down next to April.
"Look April we need to talk."
"Yes we do!", she seemed ecstatic. She smiled brightly, "I heard you were dancing with Aliss, and that she has it in for you!"
"Yeah but I wanted to talk with you about Dr-"
She cut him off, "Go for her Jasp! Don't be a pussy."
"Maybe, but can we talk about Drake."
"He brought me flowers this morning, and a box of chocolates," she smiled, "He's a sweet heart you know. He makes mistakes, but oh I love him."
He decided not to say anything. It would be futile. She was set on him. That much was true.
"She's perfect for you, I'm just being honest with you!"
"Yeah maybe..."
"What's wrong?"
"Oh. Uh nothing just thinking about it."
"About what?"
"Aliss."
"Aww. Go for her bud. I'm sure there's no one else better for you!"
"Yeah, sure. Is it not obvious. I love you!", Jasper thought.
"Yeah. I guess so."
There was his choice. The girl he wanted just set him up with someone else. Even as he felt a sudden urge of sadness, he chuckled at the irony of the situation.
It's funny how life screws us over, at times that could have been crucial, to make us happy, to make our dreams come true.
But as his dad said, "Life's a real bitch, it's screws everybody over. Haha it's screws you, but doesn't buy you a drink first."
He remembered that his dad told him that, then went and poured some whiskey in a glass and drank it.
He began to cry and said:
"Maybe that's the reason she left. When I met your mother, I didn't buy her a drink first. I just screwed her."
Then he laughed. "And when she screwed me over, she didn't buy me a drink! But now that I think about it. That day I caught your mother, there was a wine bottle in living room."
He laughed, then cried.
"Atleast he was smart enough to buy her a drink."
"Life's a bitch." Was his dad's closing statement.
His dad was right, life's a real bitch.
