Sometimes, when your scared, you freeze or run like heck. Phillip and I both did the second one.
The door was just in view, I could see it in my fingertips, almost. Then, fresh air filled my lungs. I breathed and looked back. The guards stand in the doorway, apparently unable to follow us, and turn away. That's when I knew I was free.
We walk for miles until I finally break the silence, "Phillip? Do you think we'll make it home? Ever?," I say looking at him.
"One day," he says staring off into the distance, "But for now, we walk until we find elsewhere," he says. I nod and look away. That's when I realize it probably before he did.
"But Catherine, our lives are gone, long gone."
