Wandering through town in the middle of the night sure leaves an impact on someone's state of mind. I was groggy and sitting on the bleachers staring at the tournament boys warming up for the upcoming training. I didn't plan to see the training. Initially, I just wanted to stay in the dorms, maybe catch up on sleep or smoke, but Gillian dragged me along to watch his newest prey audition for the team. Now I was here, trying to keep my eyes open, which was much harder than it sounded. And to my luck, Jay wasn't even on the field yet. While Gil eyed the other players, some of them were painfully aware of his eyes roaming their bodies and turning into a blushing mess. I looked around to find something to focus on. And there he was, the youngest Vk running onto the field, completely lost and without any plan.
They had put him on the yellow team, so he was sporting a yellow vest. In one hand, he held his helmet and shield in a tight grip. Conversely, the racquet clearly didn't know what to do with either of them. He gazed around, stumbling over the grass like no player before him.
A grin formed on my lips at that adorable sign.
"He has no idea what he's doing." Gil, beside me, voiced what I was thinking.
"Absolutely not.", I chuckled. Just at this moment, Carlos's eyes met mine, and he sent me a shy wave. I tried to gesture him what to do, but he was too far away to get it. So I just leaned back in defeat.
"Don't worry, he's going to find out the rules eventually. ", my best friend stated. "Look! There he is!"
With that, Gil has successfully spotted Jay, making his way over to Carlos while sporting the color of the opposite team.
"Looking good in shorts." Gil grinned dreamily, and I rolled my eyes again: "You're so damn horny."
"Just enjoying the view.", he shrugged. Then the Coach arrived, telling the team what to do. I've never been into sports, so I was thankful I wasn't close enough to hear any of it.
And then the shrill whistle echoed through the air, and the boys started to run after the ball. Much to Gil's pleasure, Jay was far in the front, catching the ball with ease and already running through the kill zone.
"He's good." the dwarf whistled his eyes on the VK's backside. I hummed in agreement, already focused on something, someone else. Big brown eyes stared at me from the yellow side of the field, not bothering to keep their head in the game, remembering me as a lost puppy.
It took him a minute to cope with me catching him staring; then, a smile lit up his face. And that was someone the boldest move I had ever witnessed from the boy. It didn't matter that Jay scored while we kept eye contact. No one seemed to notice Carlos, like he didn't exist.
"What are you staring at?" Gil suddenly asked, and I snapped back.
"Blue team scored.", I said, causing him to look at me like I was crazy.
"I know, dude. I've kept my eyes on the price." "Whatever.", I mumbled, fumbling in my pockets for a cigarette. When I lit it and inhaled the first smoke, my eyes met Carlos again, but this time, he quickly looked away, like he had done something illegal.
"I think the little one might be into you." I looked at Gil, puzzled.
"He keeps staring at you when you're not looking." "I'm pretty much the only one he knows besides his friends." I shrugged but couldn't help but eye the boy out of the corner of my eye. He was finally paying attention to the game, currently running from Jay, who came after him like a crazed.
Gil hummed, occupied by Jay again, who now jumped on Carlos's shield.
"I'm pretty sure that was against the rules.", I commented, wincing at the sign.
"It better is." And after the ball met the net again, the whistle was blown again, and the team returned to the coach. "I think Jay made it."
Gil was watching the team with hawk eyes: "He better. I want to see more of that fire."
I laughed, looking at the team as well. Carlos was glimpsing at me again, almost unnoticeable behind his thick lashes. I scratched the back of my head, not knowing how to deal with the boy's attention. He seemed to notice, then suddenly, his feet appeared utterly interesting.
When the coach spoke to him, he looked devastated. He probably got told he lacked talent. which was true, but on the other hand, most of the team wasn't exactly brilliant either. They lost most matches anyway.
But then Prince Ben walked towards the boy and talked to the coach. He nodded. Then he blew his whistle again, and the boys jogged back on the field. The rest of the game was pretty boring; Jay remained the only player with any luck, while Carlos was pretty bad at every position he was put in.
And I was constantly keeping an eye on him, just to check for proof of Gil's assumption. And found none. Carlos wasn't looking at me. Not a single time.
When the game ended, he just walked with the others to the changing room, not even glimpsing at us. I couldn't place the feeling inside my stomach as I followed Gil to our dorm.
I instantly reached for my supplies when I crashed unto my bed, finding and lighting a blunt as soon as possible. Gil sat down beside me, taking it after my first drag.
"You should smoke less.", he said with a wink while taking a hint himself.
"I stop smoking when you stop fucking around.", I huffed, taking the joint back.
"Maybe we should trade for a while. I smoke, you fuck. When was the last time you were with someone?" I had to think for a moment.
"Roughly a year? I don't know. I don't care. I'm not that horny."
Gil chuckled: "Ah, yes. The charming prince is waiting for some romantic bullshit. Maybe a damsel in distress? "
"I'm not waiting for a damsel in distress.", I defended myself. "I'm just waiting for someone who isn't an asshole."
"Romantic shit.", Gil repeated. I just rolled my eyes at him.
