We set out within the hour.
I was surprised, but pleased, by my brother's willingness to accompany us. It was unlikely Fomorians would be affected by another Asgardian-Sidhe war. We hadn't in the previous conflicts. Despite being on the same planet, our water-based kingdom was far enough removed from the Winter Realm that any fighting shouldn't spill over to Atlantia, unless the elves retreated to the water to escape the Asgardians.
Those fucking Unseelie would find no refuge with us.
In fact, we might join with the Asgardians this time.
I certainly would. Not only was I now married to Shannon, and it was her son at risk, but those sea foam eaters had been kidnapping Fomorians for their blood sacrifices. We hadn't been able to prove they were responsible for our missing citizens yet, but I was certain of it. Especially after Shannon's experience at their hands last year.
My gaze was drawn to her, walking in front of me with Mist as we make our way through the winding paths through thick, predominately coniferous forest full of moss, ferns, and the distinctive scent of cedar. She smiled at something Mist said, even as the humour failed to reach those hazel eyes. My heart clenched. The agony she must be suffering. I couldn't stand to see the pain and fear she was holding inside. Everything in me ached to make it better for her. What good was I if I couldn't help her? I found my fists clenching in frustration.
"She's a sexy little thing," Elada said, startling me out of my thoughts as he slapped me on the back.
I scowled at my brother. "Treat her with respect. She's your sister-in-law," I growled. It had been a while since I'd spent much time around my brother, at least twenty years here on Tír na nÓg. His attitude and constant leering at Shannon was getting on my nerves when I could see it bothered her.
"What? Are you trying to tell me you don't enjoy plundering her wet depths? I've certainly seen evidence to the contrary," he taunted with his lips pulled up into a lopsided smirk.
My teeth ground together. Shells, I wanted to punch him in the face. "What the fuck has happened to you in the last twenty years that you've turned into such a misogynistic asshole? Our mother would have you lashed in public for saying things like that."
He waved a dismissive arm. "I've been stationed on Earth, surrounded by their culture bombarding our outposts with their ideas for the last five centuries. She can't be shocked that I'd pick up some of their attitudes. It's not like Mother arranged a cushy marriage for me, so I wouldn't have to fight to get access to a female," Elada grumbled, slapping a tree as we passed.
Fight to get access to a female? I blinked and stumbled on a root, catching my balance at the last minute. When did he get that twisted up? Our culture didn't compete. Even with the five males to one female ratio, there were always available groups willing to expand if Elada didn't want to settle into a committed relationship with one particular unit of partners.
