Thursday 7:02 pmFor some things I'm eternally grateful. These things include coffee, really good hair days, the three weeks when I don't have my period, and automatic closets. Today it should have been the closets. Because mine, was empty. As in, there was literally nothing but a bunch of hangers in it.
"Crap, crap, crap", I muttered, slamming the closet door. I waited, counted to five, and then flung it open again. Nothing.
"Oh come on, you bloody bollicking.....cow.". Yeah, my swearing was pretty pathetic. I didn't really care at the moment though. Trying the door one more time, I found it still didn't work.
I finally relented and pulled the manual out from my nightside drawer. It was thin and only took up a page, but I had been determined not to use it. Oh well. I unfolded the paper and scanned the page.Automatic Closet User Manual
Print date October 22, 2008Congratulations! You've purchased your first Automatic Closet™. Auto installation is quick, easy, and efficient. Simply plug in your Automatic Closet Connector Port™ to the socket on the left side of your standard sized closet. Flip the pink switch to the left, turning on your Automatic Closet™. You have now installed your closet. Now that it is working, you are ready to use it.
To work your Automatic Closet™, you simply need to complete three tasks:
1. Stand in front of your closed closet door, holding the handle, which, if working properly, should be a faint blue color.
2. While still touching the handle, state out loud the full outfit or clothing items you require, while picturing them in your mind.
3. Wait five seconds, and then proceed to open the closet door, where your clothing will be waiting.
You have now learned how to handle the Automatic Closet™. As a very important customer, we value your opinions, and would very much appreciate your feedback at www.automaticcloset.com. Thank you for your service.
Well, that would explain why it didn't work. I folded the paper and tossed it onto my bed, which was already strewn with books and earbuds.
Turning back to my closet, I blew a lock of hair out of my eyes, and rested my hand on the door handle. As promised, it glowed lightly. In my head, I pictured an oversized blue sweater, a short white skirt, and blue flats, topped off with white pearl earrings and a necklace.
"An oversized light blue sweater, a mini white skirt, pearl earrings, a pearl necklace, and blue ballet flats, uh, please" I closed my eyes and waited.
One. Two. Three. Four. Five.
I turned the handle. A long blue knitted sweater, matching ballet flats, A white mini skirt, pearl studs, and a layered pearl necklace were hung in my closet. They were exactly what I had imagined. And they were perfect for tomorrow. To make this perfectly clear, I was not going on a date with Adrian. Never in a million years. I was just, meeting him. That's all. Even if he was a jerk, I couldn't just stand him up, despite what I had told him last week. But it was NOT a date.
I took the outfit out of the closet and laid it at the foot of my bed. Even if I didn't want to, my heart raced a little when I thought of Adrian. His smile, the little accent, the way he laughed. I shook my head to clear it. I DID NOT, could not, like Adrian. Could I?
