First off, house-watch SUCKS. Don't get me wrong, I love bossing people around, but when it takes an hour? Not so much. Obviously, I don't house-watch the entirety of Heaven, because it would take foreverrrrrrr. I just review a section, but believe me, it's enough. You have to go around to every house in your section, and make sure everyone's inside. This didn't happen until the world ending thing I said earlier, and it's a pain. I don't have anything else to do though, so it's not like I can trade my job.
I opened the door to my office and stepped out. The sun was gorgeous and the clouds hung like cotton candy, puffy and white. Just like every other day since the beginning of time. The thing about heaven is, everyone tries so hard to believe it's perfect. So we try just as hard to make it look that way. Everyone gets a house, everyone gets what they need, it's always sunny, it's always bright. But there's never any excitement.
I rounded the corner, and was about to knock on the door of number 26 Rose Cottage Lane, when I realized something. I snapped my fingers, and suddenly I was wearing a dark grey suit with dress shoes and a red tie. Pretty sweet, right? I straightened my tie and knocked, once, twice, three times. A moment passed. Then a little girl, about 8, answered the door.
"Hello!", She said brightly. "Everyone's accounted for. Have a nice night." And she shut the door in my face. Nice. Normally, I'd go in and check each room, but I was really starting to get a headache tonight. It might have something to do with sitting inside thinking about my lack of thinking all day. Okay, that didn't help.
I turned my back to the house and crossed the street. Raising my fist against the door nearest me, I paused before knocking for just a second. Out of my peripheral vision, I thought I saw the pink curtain in the kitchen of the little girl's house move, just a little. It might've just been a breeze, but I could swear that for a second, the child's face peeked out at me. I'm going crazy, I thought. Turning back to the door, I adjusted my jacket and reached for the knob.
And then I saw her. Turning the street corner with a book in her hand. She wore a long white dress, and a crown woven from roses in her long brown hair. Her wings were flecked with little brown feathers, just like mine. And god, she was gorgeous. If my heart was able to, it would have been beating at the speed of light. She didn't notice me as she began to walk up the steps to her house. The one I was standing in front of. I cleared my throat as she neared within a few inches of my face. She started, and dropped her book. She threw her hands out to catch her balance, and almost toppled off the steps.
Without realizing it, I threw one arm out and caught her around the waist. She looked up, really looked this time, and I saw that her green eyes were flecked with gold. She opened her mouth.
"Um. Hi. I think".
