Ami's POV.
"Go on" I turned on the lights to the small space under the steps. My husband and I are emergency foster parents, so we try to make every foster child feel welcomed and safe. And usually a teddy does the trick.
To say Leigh-Anne was distraught was a complete understatement. It took us some time to get her to warm up to us a little bit.
Her eyes lit up as I opened the toy chest.
She hesitantly reached her hand out to touch one of the plush toys, she stopped looking at me.
"Take what you want." She looked through the large chest pulling out an elephant that was about her size. She put it under her arm and continued looking through the chest.
Usually we told the kids to take one. This was for Two reasons; one,so that all of the kids we foster have a special plushie as we never brought two of the same and two, it's was hard for them to travel with lots of things. They almost always end up in the garbage.
"These too?" She held up two more.
"You can take one more. Then we have to get you to bed."
"I need three. Please"
"Okay give me these two and pick one more. That's it."
She smiled, handing me the grey elephant and brown bear.
"This one please?" She asked quietly, holding up a fluffy corgi.
"Yes. Come on, let's go get in bed." She slipped her hand in mine walking with me upstairs. We have a little girls and boys room and a guest room for older kids. I decided to take her to the guest bedroom as it was across from ours.
She sat on the floor playing with the plushies while I put fresh sheets on the bed.
"Come lay down, baby" she stood up climbing into the bed.
I tucked her in before handing her the soft toys. I found it adorable how cute she was with the plushies. She kissed them both before putting them under the blankets on each side of her.
"Have you given them names yet?"
"Uh huh. This is Sian and Sairah"
"Very. . . Humany"
She smiled for the first time since being here.
"They're my sisters. I don't know where they went. I think they died."
"Aww, don't say that. I doubt they're dead. They might have just gotten lost. Don't think about that okay.?"
"Okay"
"Now try and get some sleep, I will try to see if I can contact your social worker tomorrow and see if they have your sister's." I know they weren't supposed to split siblings so if they were there then we could reunite them.
She turned away from me hugging the elephant and bear tight. While the Corgi sat on her pillow.
I turned off her lights and as I left the room I bumped into Jamieson.
"When did you get back?"
"A few minutes ago. I wanted to say goodnight " He walked into the guest bedroom.
"Goodnight mimma."
She sat up hugging him which confused me a bit.
"Mister?"
"Yes?"
"Are you guys my new mommy and daddy?"
"Something like that. We're your temporary guardians. You can be here for a few days, months, maybe even a year or ten. We don't know yet, it all depends. Would you want us to be your new mommy and daddy?"
