A brief look in the rear view mirror revealed to me, a woman who was gravely concerned for her friend's well-being.
I couldn't see Selassie, as she was laying across the backseat, with her head on Vanessa's lap. But I was able to see V's shoulder moving slightly, presumably because she was using her hand to caress her friend in this time of need.
All the hallmarks of an emotional breakdown having taken its toll were there, to be seen.
Even in the green luminescence, which emitted from the traffic lights we were passing, her eyes were bloodshot. One appeared a little bit smaller than the other, because she rubbed it too hard.
Her skin lacked its signature lustre, and her lips were set in a deep frown.
Goddamn.
There had been so much that had happened tonight, even I was still reeling from it.
It seemed like my passengers were too, as I heard a few sniffles, increasing in frequency, before the elusive woman started crying again, albeit almost silently.
The streets were empty for the most part, allowing me to manoeuvre across town effortlessly. The Maserati I was operating wasn't mine, and took some getting used to, but it wasn't impossible, and in all honesty, didn't really matter right now.
Right now was all about getting this woman home safely, and getting back to my brother.
Who did you get yourself tangled up with, Lucas?
I'd heard Vanessa mention her Head of Security's name a few times, in passing, never thinking anything of it. I'd never met the woman, and didn't have a face to put to the name, let alone a story.
But tonight, I got way more than I bargained for.
We were all stunned silent, listening on wordlessly, as she told her gut-wrenching story. And although the girls obviously knew much more than us, I could tell that there were things even they were hearing for the first time.
What a resilient woman.
All of a sudden, I was thinking about my family and network in a whole new light. I'd never even considered a sequence of events that would have led to one of my siblings or I being separated from our family in childhood.
And that was just the tip her Iceberg.
To say that Wild had played down her importance to him was an understatement. There had been no mention of the fact that they were in love, and in a relationship when they were forced to part ways.
