I just returned stateside and moved back into my house on campus with a few of my friends. It was New Year's. I hadn't seen anyone in months and I was very ready to remind them that I was back. There was a function down the street; a house show, somewhere we went a lot during our time in school.

I had just gotten out of the shower and was brushing my teeth before prepping my face for makeup. I snuck out to my room, shaking out my hair to dry it faster. Only my roommates were in the house when I left the bathroom, but I had heard a few people arrive, probably our neighbors pregaming with us as we all got ready together.

I dreamt about this night since I left for the Arab World. There was someone I longed to see and wanted to impress. Someone I thought of a lot while I was traveling and it was likely we'd see each other that night, which made it all that much more important that I looked my absolute best.

I wore cherry and cream, mixing warmth into the cold Northern wind. My shoes were pearly snake skin, which matched the belt that cinched my waist into a mod bodysuit, layered under a black pencil skirt. Bubble gum pink tights, butterscotch colored ceramic earrings, and pink pearls completed the look.

I waited to do my makeup until I was in the living room with everyone. Gathering it up in my hands, I pushed my door open and headed towards their voices.

As expected, some of our friends had arrived and we're hanging around as we got ready. To my surprise one of those people was who I'd just been hoping to see.

But not like this! I panicked as I looked at my hands, still holding my concealer, lipstick, mascara, and highlighter, debating if I should run back into my room to finish my face before greeting them. Maybe they didn't see me yet and I still had time to look as good as I had wanted to.

But  that didn't seem to matter then. I'd gone months not knowing if we'd ever see each other again and now we were in the same room together. I tossed my makeup on the table and ran across the room to throw myself into their arms. Finally.

"Hey, I didn't know you were back!" I beamed over their shoulder, relieved I wouldn't have to spend the whole night searching for them. "You smell really good!" My eyes filled with roses.

We walked to the function shoulder to shoulder, grinning sweetly. Despite the freezing weather, I arrived completely melted.
