That lake was... Immense. Maybe even bigger than the huge ones signed on the maps? Who knew, but it probably mirrored at least one of those, given the width.
Crystal clear water, beautiful trees and bushes that surrounded it, making it an idyllic landscape right out of some fairytale or epic ballad. Once near the shore, Artica looked around and called for anyone who was there to teach how to use her innate, yet undeveloped, magic."Could they be late?" she thought sitting on a rock and just looking at the perfectly flat surface. While waiting, she decided to pass the time by taking flat, round pebbles and just throwing them on the surface, counting how far could they bounce.
"One, two, three, four... Wow, that's a record" she smiled, throwing another one and counting again. She was about to throw the sixth one when she noticed figures in the water coming towards her, almost falling in the lake as she panicked and threw the pebble aside and hoping she didn't hit anything or anyone.
Artica wondered what magnificent creatures of arcane power could be teaching her, maybe other Elves? Water Elves? Were they a thing? Or maybe just Water Sidhe, yes, that was more like it... She expected them to be elegant, beautiful, maybe people with fish tail?
She held her breath as three heads came out, finally she would meet her magic teachers, final-"A seal??"
Artica glanced around in disbelief, was that a prank? Maybe some other Fae pulled a prank, they were pranksters indeed.
"Haha, real funny, Water Sidhe. You really played me well" She clapped her hands "Now could you please come out?"
The seal snorted and huffed, swimming to the shore and finally setting their fins on land. That's when Artica realized they were human sized, stepping back as they moved as if they were slowly standing up.
The half Fae witnessed another miracle as the seal fur transformed in a coat of white fur, human hands appeared from the thick sleeves and pulled the head as if it was a hood, revealing a woman's visage underneath. She was beautiful, with ebony hair, eyes and peach colored skin."No, i didn't play you, Winter Child"
"Oh... I should have known, I'm sorry" Artica bowed her head to the seal woman "May I ask what kind of Sidhe are you?"
"Why, I'm a Selkie. Aisling, of Manannan MacLir's court"
Selkie... Selkie... OH! Of course, the seals who could turn into women and live both on land and ocean, now she remembered. "Pardon me, wise Selkie. I didn't expect it"
"It's understandable, now sit and tell me about your magic"
Artica sat down, adjusting her lower wings to be draped on her crossed legs and explaining she didn't exactly have full control of her magic, it just flowed naturally whenever she felt strong emotions, for example when she froze milk by accident, or when snowflakes appeared around her, or when she unleashed the snowstorm on Crom's Soldiers attacking Fìor Tobar.
"The only time I actually controlled it was when I was looking for answers about my parents and when wee lads and lassies asked me to for fun. But it was just a couple snowflakes I sprinkled around"
"And how did you manage to do so?" Aisling asked
"Well, I was guided by my emotions too, but I wanted to see if my talisman would react, or make the children happy"
The Selkie smiled, nodding "That's exactly it. It's an instinct every Sidhe has, lots of potential that needs some training"
Artica was relieved, listening to Aisling's speech. She said that even if she had more human blood, and so, a weaker magic, the talisman around her neck would compensate, giving her the necessary power to be equal as any other Winter Fae.
