Pain is like a rushing river that carries you with it until it hits the ocean. That could be quick, or it could take some time. "I'm sorry for walking out on you" said Haida.
"It's ok, I knew you had feelings for someone and I told you anyway." "That's not your fault-" "But it is. I waited too long, and you got away. I would be lying if I said I didn't think you were cute in high school. I did nothing about it though, so here we are." He sighs and ducks his ears down down, but he doesn't walk away. He holds my hand with both of his and looks me in my eyes. "You know you're my best friend, but I don't think we can be anymore than that." My heart stopped and I felt I was dying, but I held back my tears and nodded. "Ok, I understand." When he walked out, I couldn't hold it anymore, and I burst into tears. I know that there was nothing I could do about it, but it just didn't feel fair. I cried for a hour before deciding to lay down and deal with it later.

I wake up and just stare at the ceiling for about 15 min, before i'm snapped out of my trance by the sound of the door opening, and someone walking in. Wait a minute, it's my mom?! "Mom, what are you doing here!" "When I heard my baby got hurt, I had to fly all the way down here." "I'm not that hurt-" My head begins to feel like it's getting a hole drilled into it. Perfect timing, just great. If you couldn't tell by now, my mom is not the easiest person to like. She's uptight, overprotective, a clean freak, controlling, basically really, really annoying. "Mom, i'm fine, you can go home now." "Nuh-uh, there's no way i'm going home now, not until you're better."

I stay here another week, with my mom here as well, until they discharge me. I go back to my apartment and I feel this wave of sadness wash over me, but I just ignore it and walk inside. The apartment is very clean, and it wasn't when I left that day. Then I see a note on the counter that reads: "When I heard about what happened, I thought I'd clean up a bit so you wont have to come home to a mess." I smile a little, then look over to see mom reading the note as well. "So who is this women?" I snap my head at her shocked that she said that. "What do you mean, it's just my friend." "Ok sure, I totally believe you." "Whatever." I walk off to my room happy to finally use my bed again.

I get like 5 minutes of sleep before I hear a vacuum turn on. "Mom, I don't even have a vacuum, where did you even get that from?!" "I brought it, and as I suspected, this room needs cleaning." "Ugh." I walk off to my kitchen, hoping to get real food after eating out of a vending machine for a week. I make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, and that has to be the best food i've eaten in half a month. I go to sit on the couch, and I swear I felt something on my chest. Then the doorbell rings and when I open it, my heart skips at least 100 beats. "Hey." "Hey, what are you doing here?" "I came to give you back your spare key, and I left some clothes here."

That's when my mom walks out of my room. "Who's your friend Y/N-" She pauses, then realizes. "Wait, Haida?" "Hi Mrs. Hudai." "It's been a long time, how are you?" When my mom lived around here, Haida used to come over all the time. We were really close, but that has changed. "I've been good, how are you?" "I'm still alive so, I guess i'm good."(im sorry but rip granny lmao)"Well I just came to pick up a couple things so can I come i-" "How about I get it for you" I say. I speedwalk off, grab his clothes, then go back and give them to him.

"Well if that was it, then I guess i'll see you late-" "Maybe you should stay for dinner" Mom says. "Sorry, but he can't, don't you have that thing?" "Oh yeah, sorry. I have to say no thanks." "I insist." "I have to decline." "I made curry rice." He stops and his ears perk up. He turns around and looks really disappointed, but refuses anyway. "I still have to say no." "Oh. Well then, I guess i'll have to invite you another time." He walks off and mom looks at me excited. "I know that look, what do you want to say mom?" "Oh nothing." "Ok....." We sit down and eat dinner, and as i'm eating mom asks a question that makes me choke. "Anyways, why did Haida look so sad, he obviously likes you as well." I stop and look at her wide-eyed.

"Are you implying that I like him?" "I know. When Haida used to come over, you stared at him all the time with a smile. It was very obvious." Damn, she knew before I did. I stop and stare at her, before snapping out of it and admitting. "Ok, I guess I like him a little." "a LiTtLe, whatever." "Ok I like him a lot. Wait, did  you say he likes me too?" "Definitely. Did you see the way his ears drooped and the way he looked at you when he declined, he obviously likes you." "Well he didn't say so." "What do you mean?" "He told me we couldn't be anything more than friends." "You confessed?" "I mean yeah."  "And that's what he told you?" "Yeah." "And you're completely sure?" "I don't think he could've confused that sentence with something else." "Totally 100% sure?" "Yes mom jeez!" I get up, walk off, and slam my door.

I sit on my bed and think about what mom was saying. I guess he did look a little disappointed, but if he likes me too, why did he say that? Then my mom knocks on the door, and she never knocks. She just barges in not caring what was happening. I let her in though because she seems truly sorry. "I'm sorry for prying, I just wanted to be sure. You never let me be involved in your life, and that kind of hurts." "Oh mom, I had no idea you felt that way. I'm sorry, I guess you haven't been. Not since I left. For example, you didn't know I had my ears pierced until a month later when they got infected." "That was a surprise when I found out." I laughed a little and so did she. "From now on, I want you in my life, just give me a little space." After mom walked off, I went back into my thoughts. I now realize that this river is gonna take a while 'till it hits the ocean.
