author's note: nightwatch with han! minho will be next
••••••••••••••••••••
"The music room? " Han asked. "Yeah, it's been a while since we checked that place." Chan replied. "Can you go look around there tonight? " he added. I was assigned night watch duty together with Han. Hearing the phrase "music room" gave me throwbacks to class, so I felt relaxed. The door to the music room creaked open, and the air was filled with the smell of dust. I let out a cough. "Urg, so much dust." Han coughed out. "You've never been here before? " I asked. "No, the other guys were always in charge of patrolling this area." Han's voice as he replied bothered me somehow. It was kind of, annoyed- but also sad at the same time. "Is everything okay? " I asked. "Ah, let's just get this done quickly." Han quickly walked past me into the music room. It was the first time I had been in a room like this at night. The empty chair in front of the piano felt strange. On one hand it looked abandoned, but on the other hand it also seemed to be waiting for someone. Just like a stage without a lead actor. I turned around to look for Han. He was quietly looking over the piano. "Well, want to start looking around? " I asked. "Ah, right.." he jumped, startled by my question. Before he quickly started searching the room. It slightly bothered me, but feeling he probably had his reasons, I looked around the room too. But there was nothing noteworthy. Just piles of dust. Even the chairs were the most neatly aligned out of all the rooms we'd been to in the school so far. The windows are securely locked as well. "I guess it's all good here. Should we head back Ha-? " Han was staring at the piano again. "Do you want to play it? " I asked. "No! Of course not, why would I?! " Han jumped and waved his hands in denial. "Then why do you keep staring at it? " I felt like I cornered him there. "No, I'm just. It's not like I want to play it." he bit his lip, but I just quietly waited for him to finish. "It's just that, the songs I want to sing. I don't remember how to play them. That's why I don't want to look at it, but I can't stop." Han's face was filled with frustration. "I used to go to the music room for each lunch break and pester the teacher. I played the piano and sang, you see. At first they only let me do it every once in a while, but then they started to let me play whenever I came. Other students would come and watch me practice too." Seeing him shrug his shoulders as he bragged made me smile. "You really don't remember anything? " I asked him. "It's just a bit, hazy? It hasn't even been that long. It's so weird." he added. "Can't you play something for me? " I thought if he could play he could remember something. "Right now? " he shot back. "Ah, I didn't mean-" I thought he'd be okay with it since he talked so fondly about his memories. But it was already late at night and it suddenly got awkward as he looked at me with wide eyes. I went too far- But just as I was about to open my mouth to ask for forgiveness. "I guess I could do it once, I guess." Han grinned and walked over to the piano. It was clear he really wanted to play it. The cover of the piano had been left open. But Han brushed the dust gathered on the keys off with excited movements. "That's weird. Now that I sit in front of it, I think I remember." Han hummed quietly and pressed a couple of the keys. Perhaps because of the dust, the sound of the piano was unclear and low. "Oh, that's actually kind of nice. I don't want to wake up the whole neighborhood." Han kept smiling, his face basically shining with excitement. Could this have been the kind of person Han was before. He cleared his throat and placed his fingers on the keys, when he started humming. The melody of the piano was almost drowned out by the sound of the wooden keys and pressed them down, but it made a magical harmony together with his humming. Han seemed to think the same, as he used the wooden sounds to keep the rhythm. I was completely mesmerized by his voice. His performance finished in what felt like a second. "What do you think? " he stopped to ask. "Wow, Han! You look completely different." I added. "How did I look before now? " Han complained and waved for me to come over. I jumped over as if I had been a celebrity, and looked down at the piano. "Your turn, play something for me." Han said. "Me? No way, I don't know how." I softly added. "Um, try this." Han started to press the keys slowly in succession. The melody was short, so I memorized it right away. I slowly repeated the keys he had pressed, and the piano replied with a short melody. "See? I knew you could do it." Han added. "This is more fun than I expected. You must have really enjoyed school." I smiled. "Eh, not really." he replied. "What? How come? " I asked. "People didn't really think I'd make it as a musician. They were like, 'why would you want to be a hungry artist?' and 'just focus on your school work.' too" he sighed. "But you're so good at this." Han continued with a voice as low as a whisper. "So I told my college counselor about my dream, that I wanted to be a singer. I told him that singing made me feel so good, that no matter how hard it would be I could do it. But he told me it was just a useless dream. He said that I just wanted to be like the people on TV." Han looked down on the floor. His soft eyelashes dropped down as well. "Of course I know, who said I didn't? It would've been a tough career. But I won't give up even if someone tells me that. You must think I'm stupid right? " he asked. "No, I don't. I think it's awesome that you know exactly what you want to do. My only goal in life was to get into a decent university, after that I had no idea." Surprised, Han looked wide-eyed at me. "Later um, when this whole thing is over. Promise me you'll play for me again, okay? I really like your voice. But what if you get really famous and forget about me? " I laughed playfully, and I could notice Han smile too. "Haha, you want my autograph in advance? You know, before I get real famous and forget how you look." he laughed. "You're funny." I grinned and ruffled his hair. "Agh, get your dust filled hand away from me!" he joked. "Want to head back? " I asked. "Okaaay." Han opened the door, but stopped for a moment before going outside. "What? " I asked. "Next time, I'll give you a real concert. Special, just for you. Usually my tickets are crazy expensive, you know? " What a joker. "Alright, alright." We left the classroom feeling lighthearted and happy. That's right. I need to endure just a bit more. Because one day, Han is going to sing for me.
