Seungmins startes to doze off. "Are you sleepy, Seungmin? " I asked him. "A little." I think it's more than a little. My partner for tonight is Seungmin. I can't help feeling scared looking at the field out here. But Seungmin doesn't seem to be bothered by anything. He's probably too brave to be scared, unlike me. I lightly tapped Seungmin's shoulder. "You're not sleeping, are you? " Seungmin shook his head. "No, I'm not." His sleepy voice makes me smile. "Well, let's finish up and get inside." Seungmin nodded again. I was told the field is patrolled less than the other areas. Probably because it's a bit distant from the classroom, plus it's quite a large area. So, that's why we're only required to walk around and take a quick look to see if there are any unusual signs. Maybe, this is more like taking a stroll. But I'm still afraid a zombie might pop out of nowhere. "Hey, Seungmin." I spoke up. "Yeah? " He replied. "Aren't you afraid of the zombies? " I asked, curious. "Of course I am." He chuckled. "Oh, I thought you weren't. You know you don't look like you're scared a bit." I brought up. "I always try not to look scared. I don't wanna make the others nervous." He's quite mature and caring. I stopped and looked at him walking a bit behind. He turns his head and sees me. I feel a little embarrassed and speed up to catch up with him. "Can I ask what you did before you came here? " I asked. "I just ran away from the zombies every day." He replied. "I mean before the zombies. You know, before this whole thing started" I corrected myself. "Oh, I get what you mean." Seungmin nods and thinks for a few seconds. Should I have not asked? The silence is unbearable. Just then, a screeching noise is heard from a distance. I gasped. It sounds like it's coming from outside the fences. The sound is too horrifying that I almost screamed out. I covered my mouth with both my hands. "Hey, do not scream." We paused for a moment to take a look around. I look up at Seungmin. He stands like a tall tree by me and puts up his defense. I feel safe next to him. "It's the noise that's drawing them." He whispered. "What? " I muffled out. "I'm just guessing. So, you were wondering what I was doing before I came here? " Seungmin asked. "If you don't wanna tell me, I totally get it." He scratches his head and starts talking. "Well, I'd just go to school, and hang out with friends. Occasionally I'd fall asleep in class and get yelled at by teachers. You know, nothing out of the ordinary." I can picture Seungmin falling asleep, and it makes me smile. Seungmin looks at me and asks. "What about you? " I paused for a moment. "Um, I was kinda like you, too. Go to school, study. Be uptight about report cards. All that stuff that's remote from fun." I answered. "I guess. But now, I really miss all of that." Suddenly, tears start to fill up in my eyes. I look up at the sky and open my eyes as wide as I can so the tears won't fall. I don't want Seungmin to see me cry. The fact that we're longing for ordinary stuff makes me really sad. "Guess we won't be able to have everything back to where it was. But we have to stick it out for as long as we can until everything's back to normal." His eyes look determined and assuring as if they are telling me everything's going to be okay. I feel much more comforted. "Thanks, Seungmin." I sighed. "Don't mention it." Seungmin scratches his head again and looks around. There's no more of that screeching noise. We start walking again. "What did you usually do after school? " He asked. "I had the cram school. I'd be happy to go back and do all that now, though. But I guess my life wasn't a very exciting one. I got no hobbies, all I thought about was college. That was it." I added. "Man, I hated studying. Good for you, though. I don't know how you did it." The more I talk with him, the more I feel relaxed. "What did you do after school? Did you play computer games like all the other guys? " I asked. "No, I was on a school team." I remember him swinging the baseball bat pretty well. "Baseball? " I asked. "How did you know? " I let out a small laugh. "I don't know much about baseball, but I think it's awesome. I know there's a pitcher and a batter." I said thinking about the sport. "Yeah, it depends whether you're on the offensive or defensive side of the game. Everyone on a team takes a turn hitting the ball. Well, at least most of the players can." Oh, I didn't know that. It's very kind of him to explain all the rules to me. It's quite interesting to hear. I've never seen Seungmin talk so much. It's actually quite fun to watch him being this talkative. "So, what was your position? " I asked. "I was the pitcher." He smiled. "Wow, isn't it like the coolest position? " Seungmin went silent. "You know when they wind up before pitching. I think it looks so cool." I smiled. "That's why I started playing. But then I started to really like throwing the ball. I get thrilled when the batter misses my throw." Seungmin's eyes glow as he gets more excited talking about baseball. "You must really like the sport." I laughed. "It's fun watching, too." He added. "I've never watched a baseball game. I don't even know the rules." I signed. "Well, now you do. You'll definitely have fun next time when you watch the game." He said. "Are you sure? " I asked. Seungmin nods. "Then, what do you say we-" Seungmin interrupted. "No." I gasped. "I didn't even say anything yet! " I complained. "Weren't you gonna ask me to go and watch the game with me? " He asked. "Uh, I was. But, why not? " I asked. "I don't wanna get my hopes too high. If it doesn't happen, you just get bummed out. What's the point then? " He brought up. "But isn't it nice to have something to look forward to? " Seungmin doesn't say anything for quite some time. The patrol has almost come to an end and I see the entrance to the school building. "So, you are coming to the game with me, right? We're gonna stay safe and make it until then." I said, making myself sound serious. "Okay." I jump in excitement. Seungmin gazes at me jumping up and down. The day goes by and another day of striving for survival awaits.
