Fall in Chicago

Katniss Everdeen clutched the seatbelt of the yellow bug, watching through the side mirror the red smoke cloud of the Flare Curse catching up to them.

"The curse! It's here!" shrieked Katniss, "Can't you go any faster?"

"Not really," said Emma way too calmly. Katniss, having against all odds survived the Hunger Games, traveled across realms, and lost her memories, was now trying to outrun some magical smoke sent by an evil mayor. But Emma Swan, a lady who she just met, was driving as if Effie Trinket were driving the train on the Victory Tour; very, very slowly.

Katniss had always had trouble understanding straightforward things, like making allies in the Arena, so warming up to Emma was a challenge especially with her potent personality. But magic, this was far from straightforward. The idea of magic, being cursed, and frozen in time for the past twenty-eight years scared Katniss more than the Hunger Games itself. That's when she saw the bow and arrows in the back seat.

She didn't even stop to wonder why Emma had a bow and arrow in her car. With a sweep of her hand, she had the bow and an arrow locked in hand, pointed at Emma. Turning her head for just a moment toward Katniss, Emma's eyes went wide before turning back to focus on the road.

"Woah!" shouted Emma while driving, "What the hell is wrong with you?"

"You're going to step on that gas, or I'll jump out," said Katniss. "The thing is, I don't really believe your entire story. I know something must've happened for me to lose my memories, but I don't believe in your magical theory. Maybe hijacked by tracker jacker venom, but magic? All I know is that if you are saying the truth, I need to stay alive to protect my family."

Instead of obeying Katniss' command, Emma slammed the brakes. Katniss lost her aim on Emma with the momentum of the halt, sending the arrow flying through the car's windshield. A minute, circular opening with spider-web-like streaks plagued the pane of glass where the arrow shot through.

Emma moved her hand toward her pocket  to retrieve for what Katniss thought would be a gun. Instead, Emma pulled out something particularly small. It was a bean. Katniss chuckled. She was convinced she had lost it.

"Is that supposed to save us?" laughed Katniss. When she saw Emma's smug smile, that's when she feared she had guessed correctly. "That's not possible."

"I'll show you what's possible," said Emma and threw the bean out the window in front of the car. As soon as the bean hit the ground, sparks in the shape of a circle appeared on the road. The inside of the circle had a transparent, mirror like finish. "Ready to go?"

Katniss' eyes were glued on the portal ahead as Emma stepped on the gas just as the curse cloud began to touch the rear bumper of the car. In a fraction of a second, the car with the pair was gone and the portal closed as the fog engulfed the spot where they once stood.

The portal had transported them to a stretch of an isolated back road, but Emma reassured them they were close to their next stop. Katniss had only known the poor region Panama, except its capital, from this strange new world, and she thought it was far better than Panem. This country though, was something else. Of course, Katniss had heard of the United States of America back in her District 12 history class, and even more so during her cursed time as Katy Fletcher in Panama, but she never thought it could be so beautiful. So that meant the curse brought her back in time as well. Great.

Next thing they knew, they were merging onto Interstate 94 West toward Chicago. All the signs on the freeway made no sense to Katniss. She had never heard of most of the cities listed on the signs. For the rest of the trip, Katniss sat quiet to let everything sink in. She couldn't believe it. Or rather, now she could after what she had witnessed with the magic bean and all. She had lived a different life before, and she just didn't know because of The Queen or Regina. Regina got mad discovering that there was a cure for the curse and that they were going to try it on the tributes. She cast another curse to kill Katniss and everybody involved in the Games. That was a fact. So was magic. Slowly, Katniss' eyes began to get heavy by these complicated thoughts until she let herself fall asleep.
