Note: you can adjust some of these controls in your options menu. These are just the default ones.
Well first off you have to learn to move so you just move the mouse to where you want to look. Simple right?
To actually move though the controls are W-forward (when you double-tap the W key you will start to sprint:D), A-left, S-backwards, and D-right. Q is to drop an item and E is to open your inventory. T opens the chat up. The space bar is to jump.
Now you know that thing in the middle of your mouse that you never know what to do with? That is to scroll through your hot bar on your screen, another way to do this is to click the number on your key board that corresponds to your hot bar number. So the first hot bar space you click 1 and so on. What you can also do with the middle thing is if you are in creative and you click that button when you are looking at an item you will get that item. Pretty cool!
The left click on your mouse is what you will use to break blocks and hit people and mobs with. Probably one of the most important controls in the game. While the right click places blocks, open doors, charge a bow, block with a sword, eat food, drink potions, hoe farmland, sheer or dye a sheep, tell tamed wolves and ocelots to sit, trade with villagers, place fire with a flint and steel or fire charge, name a mob with a name tag, attach a lead to an animal or attack an animal on a lead onto a fence, cast or reel a fishing rod, throw a splash potion, egg, ender pearl, eye of ender, bottle o' enchanting, or snowball, also it equips armor from your hot bar to your person, eat cake, and start a furnace minecart. Whew, that was a lot.
What left shift does is makes it so that your name is hard to see, makes it so that if your are on a block you will not fall off of that block while holding it, when you are flying you will start to go down, lets you place blocks that you would normally not be able to place on like crafting table and furnace, it also gets you off of an animal when you are riding it.
The "/" button is what you will use to type in all of your commands.
The "tab" button when on a multiplayer server will show everyone on that server.
Now the "F" keys. F2 takes a screenshot. F5 goes between third person and first person view. F11 toggles the full screen mode. F6 starts and stops a stream. F7 pause and unpause a stream, toggles microphone, and shows commercials when streaming.
