Mistake

I realised I am mentally unable to sit at my desk and just study 10h a day so here I am lol. I have an exam tomorrow what am I doing-

The entire class trudged through the dense forest with Masumi taking the lead. Following her closely was Katsuragi and Yahiko who was struggling to keep up. Katsuragi scrutinised every inch of the hand-drawn map, probably to memorise it to get familiar with the island's layout as soon as possible. Though, I do have to applaud him. I thought Katsuragi would refuse to trust in Masumi's abilities purely due to the difference in factions. Well, reflecting back on the novel, he isn't the sort of person to do so.

Masumi waited a little bit to make sure that the whole class had caught up with her. Like any normal class, we had quite a few classmates whose physiques weren't good enough to withstand walking through dense forestry for long periods of time.

Although we had only walked for about 15 minutes or so, I could see the conditions of the physically less capable students deteriorate.

"Masumi-chan, Katsuragi-san, do you think you could go on first? I think some of the class needs a break."

"It's really close, do you think you could ask those students to bear with it for a little longer?"

"Sorry- I- really need to- catch my breath-" a classmate, Yamamura Miki, told Masumi.

Hmm? I didn't expect her to be the physically weak type. Wasn't she in charge of tailing Amaswa Ichika in the novel..? Shouldn't that task require one to be fit? And she can't even trek for 15 minutes... she must've worked really hard.

"Tch. Fine."

Masumi then lowered her voice

"But I don't want to be left alone with those two, can't you do something about it?

...please."

Masumi said that last line with a tinge of red in her ears.

I giggled.

"Masumi-chan, is the cave nearby?"

"Erm.. kind of, its just through this thicket, so you gotta walk straight."

"Katsuragi-san, Yahiko-kun, sorry about this but do you mind going to the cave yourselves? I need Masumi here to help me ensure that everyone is okay."

"Alright, I understand. Yahiko, lets go."

And with that, Katsuragi and Yahiko left.

After resting for another 5 minutes, we set off for the cave.

(we're going on a trip, on our favourite rocket ship, zooming through the skies, little einstein~)

Not long after, we bumped into Katsuragi and Yahiko who were making their way back to where we were resting.

"That was rather fast."

"It was a quick procedure. Also, I need to scout out the other two locations nearby before the other classes get to them, I felt someone's gaze watching us just now. Could I leave it to you and Hashimoto to take care of the living arrangements for the class? We won't be back anytime soon."

"No worries, leave it to us."

Wait. Wasn't there a contradiction in Katsuragi's words..?

I sighed. I had already agreed. So i need to do my assigned task.

Walking just a little further, the cave was in sight. To the side I noticed 2 pink ends quickly retreating into the bushes.

"Must be the person who was spying on Katsuragi-san just now. Hayato-kun, do you mind checking it out?"

Hayato Kito, presumably the most athletic student in our class, silently nodded and dashed to the aforementioned bush.

"Anyone?"

Hayato shook his head.

"Hmm..? Was it my imagination?" I muttered aloud

"I don't think so, I felt someone's presence too." Hashimoto piped in.

"They must've gotten away."

"I see... no matter."

Back to our task.

The cave, although its opening was rather small being about two meters in height and one and a half meters in width, was quite deep. It had enough room to not only fit a personal sleeping space for all 29 of us, but also had a common space.

Hmm.. we would definitely need to split the girls and boys up. Everyone needs a certain degree of privacy after all.

"Hashimoto-kun, what do you think?"

"We can make use of all the items we were provided for free for now. We'll see what we need to buy afterwards

I think the living quarters should be deeper inside the cave, its much cooler and it would be much more comfortable than sleeping in the sweltering heat."

"Yeah, I think we should insulate the place a little too though, it might get too cold at night"

"But wouldn't it be too warm in the day then?"

"And there might not be ventilation"

"How about sprinkling water around the area, wouldn't it make the temperature much cooler due to loss of latent heat through evaporation? We wouldn't need to insulate the place"

"But doing that will definitely attract mosquitoes, its not ideal."

"Erm.. would it be okay if we pitched in?" My classmates asked, albeit a little hesitantly.

"Sure, all opinions are welcome."

"We already have tents, don't we? If we pitch them and just sleep in them, there wont be any worries about separating the boys and the girls"

"But it defeats the purpose of us making the cave our hideout!"

"It'll be even warmer!"

"We can just make use of the tent materials to make a barrier then!"

"I digress! The cost of all the sleeping bags would be too much then!"

"Then what do you want to do, you stingy people?"

"Haargh? I'm just thinking in the long run! Can't you guys bear with the heat?"

"Us girls have it rough you know?"

[....]

The class erupted into chaos. What was meant to be a friendly sharing of ideas turn into a full blown battle, each classmate protecting their own comfort and pride, some even attempting to resprt to violence

Without a doubt, Class A is flawed.

...what do i do..?

Do I just stop the in-fighting? Okay let's do that first. But what do I do about those who are raising their fists? Erm- erm- erm-!!!

My mind's thoughts which previously flowed like water gushing out of a tap suddenly stopped. My thoughts weren't fluid. It was as if the pipes leading the water to the tap were clogged.

Hashimoto walked towards me and just as he seemed to be going to shake me out of my momentary stupor, a thunderous voice echoed throughout the walls of the cave.

"What is going on here?"

The class went silent immediately.

It was Katsuragi (and Yahiko).

"I leave for a moment and when I come back it's a war-field?"

"Tanaka-san, I expected you to keep the class in check. I had higher expectations than this."

"I- I'm sorry."
