chapter xii. | the upside down
"shut up!"
══════════════════

CASSIE KEPT HER BACK TO THE WALL AS SHE HELD the door open for Jonathan and Nancy to slip through. Looking behind Flo's desk, Cassie saw the newbie police officer, watching the television, his back to the three. She shook her head at the rookie mistake. Jonathan and Nancy snuck past and crept up to Hopper's office as Cassie stayed behind on watch.

The two were back soon, Jonathan carrying the box, and Nancy had stolen a fire extinguisher. The three slipped out again and got into Jonathan's car.

"Holy shit," exclaimed Nancy as they sat in Jonathan's car. Cassie laughed.

"Make you feel alive, Wheeler?" she asked, amused. Nancy nodded.

        "Something like that."

Jonathan began to drive them back to his house, where they would set up the operation. He parked, and the three jumped out to unload the supplies. Jonathan lifted the box, Cassie took the gas bottle and the fire hydrant, and Nancy took her bat, the lacrosse stick, and the gun. Nancy closed the car's trunk and they entered the house, instantly getting to work.

The trio rescrewed in every lightbulb throughout the house to Joyce's hanging Christmas lights. Cassie set up the bear trap in the hallway, hammering its chain with large nails to the floor so that it wouldn't move when the monster (theoretically) got stuck in it. She tugged the chain, making sure that it held.

Nancy reloaded the gun, the other two knowing that it was now her weapon of choice. Jonathan had now taken Nancy's bat, and hammered nails into it to make it more deadly. Cassie unwound the netting from her lacrosse stick before fitting the spare area with wood. She then hammered nails into it as Jonathan had done.

Nancy emptied the gas bottle onto the floor, making a trail from the bear trap to Will's room. Cassie made sure that both the lighter Jonathan had bought worked, and hers worked, just in case they needed a backup. Jonathan set up the yo-yo alert for the trap.

The three stood in the living room, each of them with a knife in hand.

"Remember..." Jonathan trailed off, wanting them to revise the plan.

"Straight into Will's room," continued Nancy. "And-"

"Don't step on the trap," continued Jonathan.

"Wait for the yo-yo to move," Nancy recited.

"Then..." Cassie showed the lighter, "We burn the son of a bitch."

"All right," Jonathan said, confident that they all knew the plan now. Cassie nodded and shoved the lighter into her pocket before looking over at Nancy, who was trembling.
