One day, Kaitlyn was at work. For the most part, it had been a pretty slow day.
A gentleman came up to the desk. "How much longer do I have to wait to be seen?" He asked.
"Sir, there are others that are ahead of you." Kaitlyn said.
"I've been waiting an hour." The guy said.
"And others have been waiting for more than hour." Kaitlyn explained.
"I don't care about the others! I want to be seen now!" The man said, raising his voice.
"The- there's nothing I c- can do about that, sir." Kaitlyn said as she stuttered.
Kaitlyn hated confrontation. When she was younger, she had developed a stutter and a little bit of anxiety. She grew out of it as she got older, but it came out sometimes when she was in nerving situations.
The man was still getting angry though.
"Is there a problem?" Someone else asked.
Kaitlyn saw it was Dr. Cullen. She couldn't really speak as he was looking towards her.
"Yes, there is!" The man exclaimed.
"Sir, I'm going to ask you to please calm down." Carlisle said. "This young lady is just trying to do her job."
"No, she's not." The man continued. "This bitch won't tell me how long until I can be seen."
What the man had said was enough for Kaitlyn to run off.
"Sir, do not speak to the staff like that." Carlisle said. "And if you don't calm down, I will have to ask you to leave. Someone will be with you as soon as they can."
The man just walked away.
Carlisle turned to Jocelyn. "Have somebody from security come down and keep an eye on him." He said. "I'm going to go find Kaitlyn." Jocelyn nodded.
Carlisle walked off in the direction that Kaitlyn went. He figured that she had into a woman's bathroom and he would just wait until she came out, but he heard a fast heartbeat as he walked by a supply closet. He slowly opened the door to find Kaitlyn.
"Kaitlyn." Carlisle said, softly.
"Just give me a moment." She said.
"Do you want to come to my office? Instead of being in this supply closet?" Carlisle asked. Kaitlyn nodded.
As she followed Carlisle, Kaitlyn took the time to calm herself down by taking deep breaths. She was more calmer by the time they got to Carlisle's office. He held the door open and closed it behind him.
"Are you alright?" Carlisle asked.
Kaitlyn nodded. "I'm sorry." She apologized.
"What do you have to be sorry for?" Carlisle asked.
"For walking away." Kaitlyn replied. "It was unprofessional."
"You did nothing wrong." Carlisle said. "That man was rude and impatient and had no right to speak to you the way he did."
"I should get back to work." Kaitlyn said.
"Why don't you take the rest of the day off." Carlisle suggested.
"But, I have to get back to work." Kaitlyn said.
"I'm sure we'll manage without you for the rest of the day." Carlisle said.
"No." Kaitlyn said.
"Well, why don't you at least take a little break." Carlisle said.
"But, I've already taken my lunch break." Kaitlyn said.
"Well, I haven't. So, why don't the two of us go to the cafe near the hospital for coffee." Carlisle said. "They'll be fine without you for a little bit."
"Alright." Kaitlyn said. They both headed towards the lobby.
"Jocelyn, I'm taking my lunch break and Kaitlyn is with me." Carlisle said. "If you don't mind helping with reception for a little bit, we should be back in about half an hour."
"Of course." Jocelyn said. "Enjoy your break."
Kaitlyn followed Carlisle towards the cafe nearby the hospital. She went to pay for her drink, but Carlisle stopped her.
"I got it." He said.
"I can't let you pay for my drink." Kaitlyn said.
"It's fine, Kaitlyn." Carlisle said. "I don't mind."
Kaitlyn had a feeling Carlisle wasn't going to let up, so she let it go and allowed him to pay for her drink.
Once they had their drinks, they sat down at an outside table. "So, how are you liking Forks so far?" Carlisle asked.
"I like how small and quaint it is." Kaitlyn replied. "I lived in Seattle before coming here."
"What made you move here, then?" He asked.
"My mother's death." Kaitlyn answered.
"Oh. I'm sorry for your loss." Carlisle said.
"Thank you, but I really don't want to make a big deal out of it. She was an alcoholic and alcoholism is what killed her." Kaitlyn explained.
"Was it just you and your Mom?" Carlisle asked.
"Yeah." Kaitlyn replied. "My father died when I was young and my older brother is in the military." Carlisle nodded. "I do have family here." Kaitlyn added.
"Oh, you do?" Carlisle asked.
"Chief Swan is my uncle." Kaitlyn explained. "After my mother's death, he offered for me to stay with him. He actually helped me get the receptionist job at the hospital."
"That was nice of him to help you out." Carlisle said.
"Yes." Kaitlyn agreed. "So, what about you?"
"What about me?" Carlisle asked.
"I heard you were new in town as well." Kaitlyn said.
"I am." Carlisle answered. "But, I'd much rather continue talking about you than myself."
"There's nothing else about me to talk about." Kaitlyn said.
"Oh. I find that hard to believe." Carlisle said.
"Plus, we should get back to work." Kaitlyn added.
"If we must." Carlisle said with an exasperated sigh.
Kaitlyn giggled. "Thank you for the coffee." She said as they headed back to the hospital. "And for the break."
"You're welcome." Carlisle said. The two both got back to work.
