Saturday evening, Kaitlyn was getting ready for her date with Carlisle. She had told him yesterday that she would go out with him.
After showering, she got dressed and did her hair.
She was finishing putting makeup on, when she heard her uncle downstairs. "Kaitlyn, Dr. Cullen's here."
Kaitlyn grabbed her clutch and headed downstairs. Charlie and Carlisle were waiting by the door.
"Hi." Carlisle greeted.
"Hi." Kaitlyn greeted back before turning to Charlie. "I'll see you later."
"Have a good time." Charlie said.
Kaitlyn followed Carlisle out the door. He held the passenger door open for her as she got in.
"How are you?" Carlisle asked.
"I'm good." Kaitlyn replied. "How are you?"
"I'm good, as well." Carlisle said. "You look great."
"You look great, too." Kaitlyn said. "So, where are we going?"
"This restaurant in Port Angeles." Carlisle answered.
"Okay." Kaitlyn said. "I haven't been to Port Angeles yet since moving here." Carlisle nodded.
A little bit later, the two were sitting at a table, eating their meals. Kaitlyn had gotten a pasta dish and Carlisle had just gotten a salad.
"So, where did you and your family move from?" Kaitlyn asked.
"Alaska." Carlisle answered.
"Alaska?" Kaitlyn questioned. "Wow."
"Well, we have family there, so we lived close to them." Carlisle explained.
"What made you move to Forks, then?" Kaitlyn asked.
"I got offered a position as a head doctor at the hospital." Carlisle explained. "I made sure my kids were okay with it before accepting it and we moved here a couple months ago."
"Kids?" Kaitlyn asked.
"Yeah. I have five adopted kids who are in high school." Carlisle answered.
"That's sweet of you to adopt them." Kaitlyn said. "And that's great you were offered such a high position."
"Enough about me." Carlisle said. "What about you?"
"We've already talked about me." Kaitlyn said.
"I want to know more about you." Carlisle said.
"Like what?" Kaitlyn asked.
"What branch of military is your brother in?" Carlisle asked.
"Army." Kaitlyn replied.
"How long has he been in the military?" Carlisle asked.
"Seven years." Kaitlyn answered.
"What did you want to do after high school?" Carlisle asked.
"I hadn't really decided. I wanted to go to medical school to become a doctor or culinary school to become a baker and maybe open my own bakery." Kaitlyn explained. "But, when I graduated, we didn't have the money for either thanks to my mother's alcoholism. So, I worked as a waitress to help pay the bills. Sadly, the closest I'll get to either of my wants is being a hospital receptionist and baking for fun. But, neither are really a bad deal."
"You didn't ask your uncle for help?" Carlisle asked.
"I didn't want to bother him." Kaitlyn replied. "He had his own family to help out with."
Carlisle nodded.
"How long have you been a doctor?" Kaitlyn asked.
"Awhile." Carlisle answered.
"That's all I get?" Kaitlyn asked.
"I can't reveal everything on a first date." Carlisle said with a chuckle. "We'll have nothing else to talk about."
"I'm sorry I said yes so last minute." Kaitlyn said. "I hope it didn't screw up you making the reservation."
"Not at all." Carlisle said. "No need to apologize. It wasn't a big deal."
Later that evening, Carlisle and Kaitlyn were driving home from dinner.
They weren't far from Kaitlyn's house, when Kaitlyn realized something. She left her purse at the restaurant.
Kaitlyn immediately started internally panicking. They were almost forty-five minutes away from the restaurant and almost to Kaitlyn's house.
This wasn't the first time that something like this had happened. She had been on another date with a guy before she ever moved to Forks and she had forgotten something at the restaurant. They were a hour away from the restaurant and when she told her date, he was quite angry with her. Would Carlisle be the same?
Kaitlyn winced at the memory. She was brought out of her thoughts by Carlisle.
"Are you alright?" He asked.
"Y-Yes." Kaitlyn said, stuttering. "I'm. I'm fine."
"Kaitlyn, what's wrong?" Carlisle asked, concerned.
"N-Nothing." Kaitlyn said. "I told you I'm fine."
Carlisle pulled over to the side of the road. He turned towards Kaitlyn, who was in tears.
"Kaitlyn?" Carlisle continued, very concerned.
"I left my purse at the restaurant." Kaitlyn said through a sob. "I know it's forty-five minutes away. I'm sorry."
"Hey. Hey. It's okay." Carlisle said, trying to calm her down.
"I'm sorry." Kaitlyn repeated.
"It's alright, Kaitlyn. Carlisle assured her. "These things happen. We'll turn around and go back to the restaurant."
He turned the car around and drove back towards the restaurant.
Later that night, Carlisle was back at the house and was in his office. He couldn't stop thinking about Kaitlyn and how upset she was earlier. It was like she was afraid he would be angry with her for having to go back to the restaurant. He had suspicions before that she had endured some kind of abuse at some point in her life after that encounter with the rude man at the hospital. And those suspicions were increasing after what happened tonight. He thought about maybe asking Charlie about Kaitlyn's life before moving to Forks, as Kaitlyn didn't say much about her family, but he didn't think he'd be able to do that without raising suspicion from Charlie.
There was a knock on the door and Carlisle quickly shielded his mind, in case it was Edward. He wasn't sure he wanted his family to know about this yet.
"Come in." Carlisle said.
It was Edward that walked in.
"Hello Edward." Carlisle greeted. "Is there something you needed?"
"How was your date?" Edward asked.
"It was fine." Carlisle replied.
"We want details." They heard Alice say.
"For the record, my love life isn't any of my children's concern unless it becomes serious." Carlisle said. "Which it isn't right now."
Edward narrowed his eyes. Carlisle was keeping something from them.
