"Wake up Nathan." I hear Mum say to me. "Wakey wakey. Nathan." I open my eyes to see Mum stroking my hair. I lift my hand to rub her shoulder and then lay in her arms as I start to waken. "Yes, sweetheart I'm here. How are you feeling my baby boy?" she asks.
"I feel a bit better the sleep helped me lots." I answer. Mum places her hand onto my forehead. "At least your temperature is improving." she tells me. "I'd wrap up when we go outside. You don't want a fluctuating temperature I have your coat hanging up with a scarf to keep you nice and warm." I nod, and then get myself dressed. Mum helps me to pack. I stand up for a little bit but I feel a bit dizzy. "Sweetie are you okay?" I ask. I place my hands on my knees. "Just sit down for a bit. I'll finish the packing. Take some deep breaths." I nod and focus on my breathing.
Later we get breakfast before we head to the station. Mum links my arm to steady me.
"It's alright sweetie I've got you." I'm panting a little bit. Shall we get a drink and maybe a sit down somewhere?" I nod. We head to the nearby Costa. "Maybe a caffeine kick will make you feel better." I nod knowing Mum is always right. "Take small sips yeah? We can always finish this on the train I've asked for a takeaway cup." We're sat on a sofa at the back. I'm cuddling with Mum as I try to get my breathing under control.
"Mum." My voice barely comes out a whisper.
"It's alright I'm here lie quiet now. You're in my arms. You're safe on a sofa in a nice warm place."
"It's been..."
"I know," she reassures me. "I know it's been turbulent. "The next few weeks definitely take it easy. I'll be here. Don't worry about America. Don't go if you're not ready." I'm literally sobbing and clinging onto her. My breathing is getting faster. "Don't cry it'll be alright. Do you want me to get you some water?" I nod with my eyes closed.Karen's POV
We're in Costa and Nathan's having a panic attack. I place my hand on his shoulder to try and calm him. He's in tears so I get him some water. I go to the counter and ask "Excuse me my son's not well. Have you got water on tap?"
"of course," the barista asks. "Is he okay?"
"He's having a panic attack. He's just over there."
"What's his name?"
"Nathan," I answer. We both crouch down in front of Nathan.
"Nathan, can you hear us. Just focus on your breathing." I place my hand on his knee. He looks up with tears in his eyes.
"Do you need any water?" He nods shakily. The barista brings the glass to the table. Nathan takes small sips. "Take small sips alright?" Nathan nods again. His breathing eventually calms down. "I'm sorry. People have just seen..."
"Don't worry about that." I tell him. "Forget about any witnesses." I tell him. "What's more important is that you're okay. There's other trains. We can sit here as long you need to." I give him a hug. Nathan sobs on my chest. "You're alright. Sssssh calm down you're safe. You'll be alright." I sit with him in my arms for about 10 minutes as he calms down. He sips his water. Eventually Nathan settles. "Come on love let's get you on the train. can you stand up for me?" Nathan nods and I help him to stand up. I link his arm with mine to keep him balanced. "It's alright, take your time." Nathan's legs are shaking he wobbles a little. "Sweetheart you alright?" Nathan sighs. We sit down on a bench.
"My legs wobbled." he answers sipping his hot chocolate. I rub his back gently.
"It won't be long we'll get you home safe and sound." He nods and squeezes my hand. The train pulls in and I help him on. He looks like he's struggling he is holding onto the seats. I sit him down at a table. Nathan snuggles with me on my chest.
"I'm sorry." he whispers sipping his drink.
"Nothing to be sorry about," I reassure him. "It won't be long we'll get home. You'll soon be in your own bed." He snuggles on my chest. "Sweetie you can go to sleep. We'll be home in about an hour and a half. Here I'll put this on you." I place his coat over him. Nathan's breathing becomes relaxed, and he has fallen asleep. I cuddle him in my arms for the full journey. Poor Nathan. It's been difficult for him these last 2 nights. "My poor baby he looks so pale. I'm here sweetie. I'm here to make you feel better. Everything will be alright." I push his hair out of his eyes. His face looks white as a sheet. There's nowhere better for him to be when he's ill than safe in his mother's arms. "You're safe," I tell him. "You're safe in my arms. We're nearly home." I kiss his head gently. The train rides over a bumpy bit of track. Nathan stirs a little. "Ssssh sweetie. It's alright. Just relax in your mother's arms. Keep breathing." Nathan breathes in slowly. "I've got you. Rest in my arms." I cuddle him close to my chest and he falls asleep.
"Nathan we're home sweetie." I stroke his hair gently. Nathan sits up in my arms. "We'll be pulling in shortly. We'll let you wake up a little."
"That went over so quick." he tells me. "I felt like I had blinked and we're home."
"You were asleep the whole journey." I tell him. "I gave you cuddles held you in my arms and had a quiet talk like I did when you were a little boy." I help to put his coat back on then tuck his scarf in. I kiss him on the cheek before we get up. I help him off the train he looks like he's going to fall down. "It's alright I've got you."
