One Island

Heat beats on my neck

Coconuts hang from palms

The sand, once so soft and pleasant,

Is almost too hot to stand on.

Vegetation, here and there,

Decorate the middle of the Island.

Trees, ferns, reeds, flowers, and grasses

Grow in clumps and groves.

There are creatures

Of every shape, size, and colour.

Crabs, with shells so hard,

Slip in and out of the water.

Seagulls caw overhead, hungry.

Osprey, eagles, and hawks watch warily,

Wings protecting chicks, nests, prey.

Fish flip in the water, an easy meal.

Trout, minnows, salmon, pike

The occasional tuna, if you like

Dolphins leap out of the rolling waves

Sharks' fins glide through them with ease.

I have a raft,

Made of logs, mud, and vines.

The sails are so fine, you wouldn't

Think it bark.

I do not use it,

Do not touch it or notice it.

It is man, modern.

I now know Nature,

All from this One Island.
