The kids had been in the RV for so long the girl was becoming antsy. Mary was passing the motor home as Peter sat still reading his book slowly turning a page every few minutes."Are we there yet." Mary whined throwing herself back into her seat.
Dale chuckled at the child's misery and continued driving. "I'll let you know when we're there."
Mary let out another groan before getting up and sitting next to Peter. The boy smiled as the girl rested her head against is shoulder in defeat.
"what are you reading?" Mary asked as she read along with him.
"Great Expectations... By Charles Dickens.. its a story of affection, loyalty, and conscience." Peter whispered as he continued to the end of the page.
Mary closed her eyes and listened as Peter read quietly under his breath. After a few moments she falls asleep against his shoulder.
"alright we're here be ready." Dale said as he turned off the car and turned to the kids.
Mary continued to sleep and Peter closes his book. Right before he wakes her Dale stops him.
"let her sleep I'll carry her in." Dale says as he lifted the exhausted child onto his back.
Peter grabbed his book and Glenn grabbed the child's hand. The woman from earlier came from the back. She looked tired she had bags under her eyes and tear staines on her cheek. Everyone quickly got out of the RV and followed single file to a building. People from other cars all joined together till they had to make rows so the lines weren't to long.
"Everyone stay close don't let one bite you." Shane said as he pushed everyone forward.
There were walkers everywhere. They were mixtures of army men and civilians. Peter stayed close to Glenn not wanting to have to use his powers and expose himself. As the group continued on the path to the building they reached a steel door.
"HELLO!!" The unknown man said hitting the metal door. "Please we need help!!"
no response.
"Please we have kids out here we need you to let us in."
"Rick face it no one's in there and if there is they aren't going to let us in lets go back to the RV while we still have time." Shane said as he gently pulled his niece off Dales back and held her in one arm.
"WAIT!!THE CAMERA IT MOVED!!"Lori said as she pointed to the small surveillance camera in the corner above the door.
"YOU SON OF A BITCH LET US IN! ARE YOU REALLY JUST GOING TO SIT THERE AND WATCH US GET KILLED!" Rick said smacking the door.
some of the men of the group start shooting at the walkers trying to by the group more time. Finally the doors opened and everyone filed in and the doors closed behind them. The group looked around at the seemingly empty building. After a few seconds a ginger man with short buzzed hair like Mary came up to the group.
"anyone bit?"
"no..there was a man but we left him on the side of the road."
"are you open for giving blood samples so I can test it?"
everyone exchanged a look before all nodding.
"Then follow me this way." The man said motioning them to follow behind him.
Shane woke Mary (who was a very heavy sleeper) so she can walk on her own. He set her on the ground and she quickly joined hand with Peter and followed behind the man as he led the ground into a room.
"Alright I'll do kids first since there are more of them." The man said as he motioned for Mary to come over.
"alright you'll feel a small pinch and then we'll be done."
Mary nodded already knowing what to do from her practice in the lab. The man inserted the needle and Mary didn't even flinch. Shane watched as his niece stared off into the distance as if she was in her own world. After the man finished Mary hopped down and Peter stepped up.
'Of course the lab rats are the first two to go.' Mary thought as the man finished up with Peter. When the boy hopped down he opened his book and began reading. He was already halfway through the thick book. Mary followed her friend as he sat by a wall. She rested her head against his shoulder and listened to him read again.
"You got some brave kids over there. Who's are they?" The man says motioning at the two in the corner.
"the girl is my niece and they boy is a friend of hers.." Shane said as he followed the doctors gaze.
After the man finished all the tests on the blood he let the group roam around.
"there's running water but don't use the hot water."
"you have running water?" Glenn said with a big smile.
the group all ran off to their own rooms where they all took showers even Daryl who was at first apposed to the idea. Mary and Peter found some old baggy clothes from who ever stayed there last and put them on and met the group in the cafeteria. They were all laughing and joking around as they ate. The two kids sat next to Daryl who was obviously becoming their favorite adult and started filling their plates with food.
"Obviously the venison is better." Daryl says as he takes a bite of the chicken on his plate.
everyone laughed and drank. Shane smiled every once in a while but he couldn't take his eye's off Lori. He didn't even care that is niece was growing distant with him. The only person in his mind was was Lori Grimes a married woman to his best friend. Ever since Ricks return Shane has been slowly becoming erratic. Peter knew deep down its only a matter of time before Shane does snap and he wants to make sure he keeps his bet friend safe.
