Lucas's POV
When I saw Max's hand bleeding, I wanted to throw up. I felt sick."Oh my fucking god," Dustin gasped. Steve was looking at us with glossy eyes. "It's okay," he whispered. It sounded almost as if he were saying it for himself. He took out a first aid kit from his backpack and grabbed the bandages before wrapping them around Max's pale wrist.
I gently held her hand, careful not to hurt her. However, out of nowhere, she suddenly blinks her eyes open.
Everyone looked at her, not knowing if they were hallucinating or not. "Max?" I whisper. She's quiet for a moment, but then she fully opens her eyes.
I look at her with hope and a smile on my face. "Max! Max?! Hey, Oh my god!"
"Max?" Steve says and very softly shakes her, trying to get her to react. Max then yelps and starts crying, that's when my smile fades.
I was blinded by the fact that she woke up and forgot in what situation she woke up. She doesn't even utter a word while she sobs.
She must be in so much pain. Can she hear me? I think to myself.
Mike holds her left hand while I hold her right one, but she's still whimpering and crying. I can't blame her tho she just woke up after 5 months in literal fucking hell.
"So we need to be quick, we can't waste time. We need to take those veins out as fast as possible. So concentrate, this is important. First, we free her neck, then quickly we free her from the other veins that cut her, and while I do that, you guys need to bandage the wounds. When she's free, Lucas, you need to be fast and take her to a hospital or she will bleed out," said Steve with a worried tone.
Bleed out when I heard this, I started panicking even more, but I couldn't afford to be weak right now. I had to help her, no matter what it took.
We all nodded and looked at her with wide eyes full of fear. I cupped her cheeks, trying to calm her down, knowing this would hurt like hell.
"Max, it's okay. It's going to be okay. Just hold on," I say, trying to sound as calm as possible. She doesn't answer, but just keeps breathing heavily and sobbing.
We cut the vein on her neck. Now for the worse part. She was getting paler and paler every second. "Max, this is going to hurt a bit, but I promise you it's going to be okay. You're strong, you can do it," I tell her.
Mike is still holding her hand, and I can see tears falling out of his eyes. Dustin is looking at Steve with fear in his glossy eyes, then everyone looks at me, and I nod. They nod back, and we all get ready.
It's happening.
We start to free her hand. Which makes Max cry even harder, her lips were shaking as if trying to make out something but not being able to.
After a few moments, the vein disappeared, and her hand started pouring blood. She screams in pain while squeezing my hand weakly.
At this point, I want to cry so bad, but I need to be strong. We immediately start to free her thighs while Dustin bandages her wrist. The veins on her thighs disappear, and both start bleeding.
Max is shaking her head, but we can't stop. We have to do this quickly or she'll bleed out, and I can't lose her.
Max has always been my North Star, my guiding light. I need her.
Everyone tries to calm her down, but it's not working. I am not sure she can even hear us. "Max just breathe, it'll be over soon," says Steve. She looks like she's about to pass out. "Okay we don't have time, we need to do this right now!" Steve continues, and we nod.
After a few moments, Max's ankles are bleeding like crazy, and Dustin and I are wrapping bandages around her wounds.
Max is still screaming from the pain. If only I could help her. Feel her pain so she doesn't have to feel it, I think to myself.
Now we're about to free her stomach, the worst part. Steve, Mike, and I are trying to kill the veins on her stomach while Dustin is still wrapping bandages around Max's wounds. We finally kill those veins, and Max screams in pain again.
After that, she calms down, but not in a good way.
Steve quickly picks her up bridal style. She is placed on the back of the bike with Steve's assistance after I sprint over to it.
She is leaning on my back, her weak hands on my torso. I cycle faster than I have ever in my entire life with Max on me.
I know she doesn't have a lot of time, and it scares me. What if she doesn't make it because I'm too slow? What if? No. I can't think like that, she's going to make it. She has to.
I try to talk to her, but she doesn't answer. She just keeps sobbing into my back.
I'm covered in blood. Her blood. "Max?! Max! Listen to me, just listen to my voice, okay?" I yell, and her already weak grip around my torso starts to get weaker.
"Max, it's going to be okay. Just hang on, hang on, please," I beg her.
"Hey?! Just listen to me! What's your name?" I ask her; she is not saying anything, but I can see that she's trying "M-Ma-x." She mumbles out, "Oh my, okay, great, great, I'm here. What about your last name?" I ask, "May-f-field," she says through sobs. "Ok, good, you're doing great. Just hold on a little longer for me, please." I say I'm starting to cycle even faster.
I can feel her passing out slowly but surely. "Max? Max?! No, no, no! Stay with me, please!" I again beg (deja vu, Lucas).
"Max?! Hey, talk to me. What's my name?" I ask her, but nothing comes out. She's not sobbing anymore, which can only mean one thing.
"Fuck no, no," I scream.
